    I was wondering if anyone could recommend a not-so-advanced program that would allow me to combine multiple videos. For example, I wanted to combine two movies into one continuous movie. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    I have windows xp SP2. I do have windows movie maker but I don't know if that's a good program to use for joining videos.

    That's easier said than done. VERY easy if both movies have identical characteristics - video dimensions, frames per second, same codec, etc. You can drag both files into Gspot and verify they are the same. Start with that....

    If they are identical AVI files, you can join them with Virtualdub. Here's a tutorial on how to do so. It is quite easy.

    You can use Mpg2cut2 http://download.videohelp.com/download/mpg2cut2_6917_libmmd_mpalib.zip

    - Still, they will have to be the same fps and dimensions.

    Open your first Mpeg in Mpg2cut2

    Then choose File---->Append File

    Choose your second file

    Then File---->Save All Clips

    I think WOMBLE is one of the easiest MPEG editors to use.

    I also would like to take a piec of a film and throw the rest away. For example, I have a 2 hour movie but I only want 3 minutes of it. Is there anyway to somehow cut that part out?

    Virtualdubmpeg2 will do this. It reads most formats, but you will have to re-encode depending on what you cut, and what the source format was.

    As to your original question, if your source is avi, have a look at AviDemux. It ain't pretty, but it seems to be able to join videos that others won't, including source with VBR MP3 audio.

    As long as you don't mind installing the .NET 2.0 framework, Cuttermaran will also cut mpeg streams. You have to demux it first though. TMPGEnc Plus will happily demux for you.

    well, I need a program for all video types because I found some other vids where I'd like to take a 3-4 minute part of the movie out. Ok, so if I get virtualdubmpeg2 program how would I cut out the clip?

    lordmajax,

    Using VirtualDubMpeg2 is pretty easy. Just go to the first frame that you wish to cut out. Press the button that looks like a half-arrow pointing to the left. That will mark the beginning of your cut. Now go to the last frame you wish to cut out. Press the button that looks like a half-arrow pointing to the right. That will mark the end of your cut. You'll notice a section of the trackbar at the bottom of the window will turn blue. Now press the Delete button. Continue selecting and deleting as necessary.

    Now click Video->Compression and select the Codec you wish to output your AVI with (VirtualDubMpeg2 will only output AVI). Then go to File->Save as AVI and give it a name. Presto - you have an AVI containing only the parts you didn't delete.

    Note: You'll have to re-encode to MPEG2 if you want to author a DVD with this, which is why I suggested CutterMaran for working with MPEG2. It saves you the re-encode and the associated loss in quality that you would get by using VirtualDubMpeg2 or VirtualDubMod, then re-encoding to MPEG2. If you're working with AVI anyway, no big deal, unless you're starting out with something like DivX AVI in which case your procedures for using VirtualDubMpeg2 or VirtualDubMod are quite different. I don't usually work with DivX or XVid so I don't really know what those procedures are to do without re-encoding. Anyone??
