    Hi

I have a Canon Elura 70 and record in the 16:9 mode.

Using the Windows Movie Maker it can capture as wmv correctly in 16:9 aspect ratio (or avi type 1). However, I'd like to use WinDV so I can get Type 2 AVI capture. Using WinDV, the captured AVI is in 4:3 aspect ratio so the picture is squashed horizontally.

Obviously I'd like the WinDV capture to be 16:9. What obvious problem am I missing? Is there a different capture software (free or cheap) that can capture Type 2 AVI AND maintain my 16:9 aspect ratio?

    thanks

  2. One way to handle this is to tell any downstream application that it is 16:9 instead of 4:3. Assuming of course that you are not just going to keep it as DV-AVI. TMPGEnc, for example, lets you do this.

  3. Capturing DV to 16:9 or 4:3 is meaningless.

WinDV (and any other DV capturing tools) simply import the DV data as they are received. It's up to the media player or editing software to be smart enough to recognize that the DV has the 16:9 flag set. Movie Maker is smart enough and that's why the .wmv files you create appear correct. If you used Movie Maker to create a DV AVI file instead, you'd have the same issue.

On Vista, for example, Media Player is can tell the difference between 16:9 and 4:3 DV.

The key to your specific issue is what you want to do with the Type 2 DV footage once you have captured it. Do you just want to watch it or do you want to convert it to, say, MPEG2/DVD? If the latter, you need to tell the corresponding software to tag the MPEG2 as 16:9.
