So today started off really low key. Wanted to wake up (early) and watch some mother fu#$ing james bond movies on my laptop. Except that for some reason, THESE dvd's won't play.. Windows media 11 tells me that it requires a codec to play this movie. All my daughters max and ruby cartoons play fine.... sigh.

So I try to get the recommended codecs. Which seem to do nothing. I download all kinds of crap and install it. I get nice new Divx players, and junk like that, but the codec appears to do nothing.
Unless I have to PUT IT SOMEPLACE that no one at microsoft wants to tell me about as it violates some patent bullshit treaty thing.

I have tried to open the movie in the divx and other "players" they all tell me that the file is not recommended. One told me the movie wasn't valid for my player due to a regional conflict, although it works on my home machine.

I also tried to un install media 11 and go back to media 9, since it played DVD's automatically.. I'm in the process of rolling back 10 a million times to get to 9... If someone could tell me EXACTLY HOW TO

    - Make a freakin dvd play on Media 11
    OR
    - Uninstall 11 from the computer completely. NOT Rollback.
    OR
-Some other bright way to play dvds on the laptop. It appears that only the ones I want to watch are affected. Go figure.
    THANKS

Ok.... here is some more usefull data???

I"m trying to play a commercial DVD, purchased in the United states, on a computer (dell cheapy notebook) with XP sp2, also purchased in the US. As for what format the dvd is in..... ummmm?

    Codec questions......
1-I download a zillion of them. Freebie try for 15 days, etc etc. They download in a zip, or EXE file. I run the EXE file. It installs a bunch of shit on my harddrive. NONE of which seems relevant to WMP 11....
1a- IS a codec some plug in like attachment that you need to load into media player to get it to work?
b-If that is the case, how do you load it in?

2- OR is a codec some stand alone player that allows you to play dvd's on your WMP equipped machine???

    Thanks!

I think this was already stated, but commercial DVDs and most DVDs need a MPEG-2 codec. Windows does not come with one due to copyright and cost issues. You have to install one. I don't use WMP, so no help there. Try VLC and you won't need to install most codecs as it uses it's own. If you want a system MPEG-2 codec, you can install Stinkys MPEG2 Codec, and I assume WMP can use that.

Codecs are installed into the OS for most part. If you install too many, you can have conflicts and problems. You can look up the word 'codec' in our 'GLOSSARY' for a definition.
