Hi All,
Thanks for all your input, postings, and guides, you all made it very easy for a newbie like me to learn.
I have three newbie questions that I need your help with. Just as a background info, I used SmartRipper, DVD2AVI, TMPGEng, and VCDEasy.
1) How do I tell when a DVD is in a film or NTSC format, which would help me decide on whether to select the video/field operations/forced film option in DVD2AVI.
2) In TMPGEng project wizard, in the select source file screen/expert setting for source/video type, how do I decide on whether to select interlace or non-interlace?
3) Where can I find a comprehensive guide on TMPGEng, showing what all the program's menus and options are for?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Theres a program called mpeg properties that will tell you the framerate.
This will only accept mpeg files, not vobs though

The Confused One, dunno about the last question, but i can sure answer the first 2 questions...
w/ dvd2avi, only thing you've mentioned that u can do is forced film...anywayz, when you have loaded the vob files into dvd2avi, you can preview it (f5). an info box will appear while dvd2avi is playing the vobs, look at the info box and it will tell you wut type the movie is (it will either be FILM, progressive or NTSC, interlaced) DON'T LOOK AT THE FRAMERATE because it's determined by whether you have forced film enabled or not and doesn't depend on the actual framerate of the vob files. look at the video type for awhile, if it's majority FILM (usually 95% FILM or higher) you can enable forced film, otherwise, if there's a significant portion of the movie that's lower than 90% FILM, you have to treat it as NTSC, interlaced and turn OFF forced film.Originally Posted by The Confused One

________
forced film on in dvd2avi, use NTSC FILM template in tmpgenc
forced film off in dvd2avi, use NTSC template in tmpgenc
source aspect ratio (either 16:9 or 4:3), you will find this out in dvd2avi's info box as well
image positioning method: full screen (preserve aspect ratio)
your output video for your dvd rip should be 4:3 NTSC
