All DLP lamps eventually need to be replaced. The good news is that sets are built for easy access to the bulbs, and that is the only maintainence issue. The bad news is that bulbs start at $200. There really aren't any bad brands out. The best thing to do is go to the store and look for yourself.

    Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. If I get the Samsung will I also need
to get a upconverting dvd player or will the Samsung TV upconvert
a regular progressive scan signal signal from a dvd player.

    Thanks again......

I have a Toshiba.I'm quite happy with it.I had it calibrated at the lower intensity. That's supposed to prolong the bulb life. We'll see.

  6. I'd recommend a Samsung or Toshiba model with 1080p & extended warranty (to cover bulb replacement for x years).

Toshiba is sending replacement bulb to its DLP TV customers when their bulb failed within week of purchase. Are you affected ?

I've had mine for 18 months. So far so good.I'm on satellite, and find the sd programming on a lot of stations are highly compressed, and the picture is awfull on a larger screen.I now watch most of my programming on the hidef stations, and a lot of the upconnverted sd programs on the hidef channels, despite the black bars on the side.Once you get used to hidef, there's no turning back.Especially sports.

  13. The Tosiba DLP TV is among the best when they are displayed side by side in the store.

Is Tosiba TV doing the upconversion, or the DVD player ?

I have not critically viewed the current year model Samsung DLP. But I did bring the Avia home theater dvd disc to two local large retailers to examine the Samsung 50" 2005 model. Through an analog connection the results were very disappointing. The gamma is skewed. The brightness (black level) could not be adjusted in order to view signal levels between 0 and 20 IRE. Any level below 20 is rendered as black. Also the analog to digital converters were missing bits in the 40 to 60 IRE range. Movies or critical content are wasted on this display.

In the store I heard several shoppers mention how amazingly bright the Samsung DLP is. They were attracted like moths. Bright whites yes, accurate levels--no.

Obviously Samsung marketing has determined that high contrast white level is the most important attribute of the viewing experience. I glanced at a 2006 Samsung DLP model while examining LCD displays. The picture looked the same as last year's model.

Good luck in choosing a display. Bring a home theater test disc to the store.

That's not unususal for displays to have black levels incorrect.Mine didn't appear to be too bad until i had it calibrated by an isf tech. After downloading the latest Toshiba software he spent 2 hours setting it up and it made an amazing difference.99% of purchasers either have no knowledge of the necessity of a proper calibration,or don't care to spend the money.Hard to understand, but that's the way it is.

  16. I've recently acquired the Costco version of the Toshiba 62HM196 (62HM116, which is simply a 196 packaged with the matching stand). It's a 62" DLP with 1920x1080p display resolution.

Well built, excellent picture after some basic user tweaking with THX test patterns. An ISF calibration would dial it in even more, but that will have to wait.

I definitely suggest getting an upscaling DVD player and connecting through the HDMI input. I have a Sony DVP-NS75H and it does a great job. Same goes for your cable/sat box... use the DVI or HDMI output.

I've owned two Samsung DLP's prior to this Toshiba, and the Toshiba is very impressive, for sure. I am very happy with it so far. HD cable and HD network affiliate programs are a real pleasure to watch on this set.

  18. I think they are about $2700, stand included. I don't know for sure because I got mine through the secondary market (my particular unit was either a display model or an open box store return).

  19. DLP's look great but I just can't get over that "rainbow effect". Gives me a headache.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

You are one of the unlucky ones who see the rainbow effect. No one who has watched mine has experienced it.I guess it's plasma of lcd for you.

Do you have time to test with the test DVD the newest Mitsubishi DLP - the ones with 6 colors on flywheel, 1080p (WD-Y57 that are in Circuit City)? I looked at them and I think are better than Samsung ones.
