Well, my friend downloaded a movie for me that is listed as MPG. I have downloaded at least five programs to try to get this file to play and it won't work. A few programs has already told me that it is not a MPEG-1 MPEG-2. It is listed a MPG, so I know it's not AVI or ASF or anything like that. All I can think of MPEG-4 but from what I read.. the newest version of Windows Media has all the codecs and it still won't work.
Though, I do know that my friend has an ATI video card and the movie players fine with the media player that video card supplied. Something special about it, I guess? Still, my main goal was to open this up.. so I could convert it to AVI and burn it with NERO. Now, I'm wondering.. if I can burn a file.. even if I can't see it on my computer.. and then watch it on my DVD player? Is that possible? What if you burn it to a bin. How does that work and is it possible with NERO?
Thanks.

Try analysing the so-called mpeg with mpeg properties a helpful tool http://www.medialab.se/mpgp_100.zip
If this doesn't work it could be anything. Its so easy to change the extensions of files. -
Have you installed DivX(mpeg-4)? And if it's a mpg2 you need a software dvd player like WinDVD or PowerDVD

I just downloaded the program... "MPEGprop" and when I tried to open the file, it said something about the first codes of the movie, meant it was not an "MPEG" file. So now, it could be one of a million things.. ASF, AVI, RM.. who knows. Now, just by changing the extension.. will it make a difference at all?
Just checking. -
The problem is - if this was a mpeg file it could be an mpeg1, mpeg2 or mpeg4 (as baldrick correctly mentioned) file. Normally one should know what one has, and shouldn't download stuff from the net without asking (and people wonder why they have infected systems!). Anyhow, without judging, this file may have been corrupted (become faulty) during the actual download process, there are some correcting tools out there, but then again you have to know what it is, before you can correct it. If you can find out from the source (where you downloaded it) what type of file it's meant to be - that would help.
