  2. 5.1=
    2 front
    2 rear
    1 center
    1 lfe(subwoofer)

If you do not have a surround speaker system then your player will downsample to 2 channels. All DVD players support AC3 and a PC will if you have the codec installed.

With digital surround sound you can do any combination. You can have one voice coming out of each speaker independently. Meaning you could have five voices coming out simultaneously plus a low frequency beat out of the subwoofer.

No, you can't edit AC3 directly. Each channel has to be decoded to wav, edited (separately or in a 6 track audio editor) then encoded back to 5.1 AC3
There may be applications that do the decoding/encoding "transparently" - Take a look at Sonic Foundry - there's a 5.1 plugin for it. A bit pricey tho...

AC3 does not necessarily means dolby 5.1, even though often they go together. They are two different things.

AC3 is a digital delivery "container" meant to deliver whatever audio content to your receiver (stereo) via a digital (optical or RCA) hookup.

AC3 can contain (most popular) Dolby 5.1, Dolby 6 (Pro-logic), PCM 2.0 (plain stereo), DTS.

    U couldn't find subwoofer in dictionary? <gasp> Try Wiki.com.

False...Dolby is always AC3. 5.1 can be Dolby,DTS or PCM.
