Not a new version it is a rm file. They just renamed the extension to distingish newer variable bitrate files from old CBR files. The actual container is still the same.
Real Player should play it just fine. Fact is that any other player or converter is just using the same real video decoder since the only on in existance is from real. -
rmvb means either Real Video 9 or Real Video 9 EHQ (aka Real Video 10) which libavcodec can't handle and unless things have changed VLC can't load real dll's for decoding, so it can't handle the video streams of rmvb files.
If you want a player that really can handle almost everything, I would suggest mplayer. As per my above point though, it requires a decoder from real. Basically just copy the dll to your codec dir and you are done though. Also there are packages with GUI, real decoders, etc. -

I only know that RMVB=Real Media Variable Bit rate and would like to learn more about it.

Real Alt is just that rubbish from real repackaged illegally without the player. As I said, there is no alternative. The only decoder for RV30/RV40 is from real.
Anyway, I just tried VLC (0.8.6svn build) and it wouldn't load the video. As far as I know the devs made a decission to not load external codecs for propriatry formats. -
