I am not sure this is the right place. I am interested in writing software to create video email. I want to capture the images using a webcam connected through my usb port and save the files in mpeg or jpeg format, to be viewed on other systems. Is this the correct website to find help on how to do this?

You are probably in the right place. If the images you are capturing are from the computer screen, there are better ways to do that: https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=110#110

But if you just need to capture webcam video, then it depends on your webcam. They usually come with some sort of software to save the video. Then you could convert it to what format you want.

Sorry about the signature. The webcam software did come with a capture routine, I just need the challenge. Thanks for the reply.

If you plan on writing the capture program yourself, you should start with researching either WDM or DirectShow. Since WDM is public source, it might be a good place to start.
