videohelp bitrate calculator question

somewhat new to this so forgive me,anyways,I put my information into the calculator and noticed the advanced tab.....i have a question about the information in light gray that says mpeg/author overhead.If i do not use as much overhead when authoring as this mpeg/author overhead shows,can i safely add to the maximum calculated bitrate?Example..... it shows 166mb,what if i only use 69mb when i author......can i add say 50 kbps in addition to the max bitrate calculation that i get in this case?meaning it says 9603 maximum can i safely use a rate of 9650 kbps?

Why risk it?
1) Those 47 kbps (0.5%) extra wont make any visible difference.
2) Don't fill your disks to the brim. If the media isn't 100% error free, it's the outer edge where the problems will show. Avoid that area.

Also, there are many reports of older and/or cheaper players being unable to read from burned DVDs at the maximum allowable bitrate, leading to many here recommending using a bitrate as low as 8400 as the maximum. I usually go higher, but rarely would the combined bitrate top 9000 kbps.

Unlikely. Even authoring without menus adds something like 92MB/full DVDR5 (in DVD folder format) to original MPEG files' size.

Yep, you will always get some overhead even if you don't have menus. But my calculator adds a few bits too high overhead, if you want more exact overhead use fitcd / fit2disc.
