So should he call it quits? He's still deciding and nothings been anounced yet.

He's been the heart and sould of the Red Wings for the last 20 some odd years. It would be strange to watch them without him as captain.

But maybe this would be for the best. The poor guy has had a ton of injuries the last five or six years. He played great in the end of the season and the playoffs. But he might just not have enough left him to keep going. And who knows maybe this could be a mixed blessing in disguise. If he goes they'd choose a new captain. Maybe the shakeup would help jar the team and propel them into the western conference finals and beyond instead of round 1 and round 2 losses like the last several years.

My money would be on Nick Lidstrom being the new captain, he's earned it. Though he may be too soft spoken to be an effective leader. If Shannahan stays he could do it but his production is too spotty in the playoffs to be counted on. One of the role players could do a great job. Maybe Maltby or Draper.

I think he's got a few more seasons in him. the Wings early exit from the playoffs isn't terribly embarrasing anymore, seeing as how Edmonton is now in the Stanley Cup final, and hey, theres no shame in losing to the stanley cup champions(maybe), even if they were the bottom seed.

Well its finally official they're announcing his retirement this afternoon.

That is sad. It's the end of an era. One of hockey's greats is leaving. But I think he'll be sticking around as a member of the Wings management team or scouting team.
