Please help.. I am having trouble with DVD-Shrink not being able to keep the German dialogue on the movie "DOWNFALL". It Rips fine but when I select the GERMAN audio track under BackUp/Main Movie , I always end-up with English commentary ONLY after burning the ISO to DVD-R.![]()

I don't get it. I thought the DVD had no English on it at all except the subtitles?
From Amazon.com
DVD Features:
Available Subtitles: English
Available Audio Tracks: German (Dolby Digital 5.1)
In German with English subtitles
Making-of Featurette
Cast and Crew Interviews
Commentary by Director Oliver Hirschbiegel -
Yess... The Main movie is in GERMAN but the DVD also has a Director's commentary in English and that's what I get when I burn to DVD-R. I have only tried backing up the MAIN movie so as to preserve quality. Probably; If I Back up the ENTIRE movie to ISO I won't get this problem but, on the other hand, I would lose more quality during the Compression process. Any idea what is causing this with Shrink 3.2 ? .... Thanks in advance
-
Yes, the MAIN audio (German) is Dolby Digital 5.1 and yes, I DID notice that Shrink had automatically unchecked this Audio stream so I checked the box for GERMAN audio and uncheked the box for English. Since the movie contains English subtitles I found no need for the Director's commentaries to be included. When I burned, I still ended up with English audio ONLY and no German.
-
BobK... I just found out that Shrink is simply not able to include the German audio for this particular movie when creating the ISO. (I am Baffled) After selecting GERMAN as the ONLY Audio stream and creating the ISO. I threw the ISO back into Shrink and to my Surprise, the GERMAN audio was missing and the English commentaries remained; Even though I did not include them.

I'm no audio expert....believe me....but I was always under the assumption that DVDShrink could not do anything with DTS audio....just AC3 and LPCM.
I have absolutley ZERO use for DTS....even 5.1 AC3 is useless to me since I have no home theater setup and never will....as long as I can hear it through my TV speakers I'm happy.
I've also seen MANY mentions of DVDShrink not working(or at least people having trouble) with DTS on other message boards.
I COULD BE WRONG.... -
I have never had a problem with DTS in Shrink, either cutting it out or keeping it in. I have never tried to grab just a segment with DTS in Shrink. That said, I'm not sure how DTS pertains to this particular problem, as the soundtrack has been identified as AC3. Shrink only drops DTS be default because it is generally larger than AC3, not because it can't handle it.
Are you ripping with Shrink ? If so, I suggest ripping with DVD Decrypter, then having a look at what you have on your HDD. From there you can either try Shrink again using the ripped files, or use a different program.Read my blog here.

Thanks guns1inger and hech54 for your comments. I Ripped the movie with DVD Fab-Decrypter. Not because shrink couldn't handle it, but because DVDFab is faster. I then dropped the files into Shrink and went on from there. Very interesting comments about Shrink having problems with certain types of Audio because this is not the first movie I've had Audio problems with when using Shrink. (I can't recall what the other movies where, but there were only a couple). What I am going to do now is Back-Up the ENTIRE movie(menus, extras, everything) with Shrink, convert it to ISO and burn it to DVDR. We'll see... It should come out fine. I'll let you guys know how it turned out. Thanks.

The original German release has DTS audio:
DVD-Ton: Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1
I suspect that whatever company re-did the DVD for North American release either renamed the audio incorrectly or attached the subs(and or commentary) to the wrong audio. -

I DO always have to be careful, since (as noted above) DVDShrink defaults to "unchecking" the DTS track. I simply check it off, and it has always transferred it intact, with no problem. My DTS receiver always indicated clearly when a DTS signal is being played.
2- I had no problems with any aspect of this particular DVD at all. My edition was not unusual in any way.
3- One thing I note that I do differently from the procedure used by the original poster -- I do not normally create an ISO disc image with DVDShrink Instead, I use File mode. I cannot imagine how or why this should make any difference, but it is the only difference between my methodology and that of the original poster.
4- My backup contains all of the original soundtracks, intact. All of my backups do, in fact, including dozens of other DTS backups created using DVDShrink in "File" mode. I am viewing my backup of Saving Private Ryan as I type this, and listening to the DTS track.
5- I have come across a few (rare) cases where the default audio track to be played somehow ended up being a different soundtrack than the one the user wished for. I have read posts where this occurred to several people, after using DVDShrink. It can also happen using other programs, as well... There is an item somewhere in the settings (as I recall) that deals with this issue. In such cases, I would suggest that one only need to grab the remote control for the DVD, and find the "audio" button on it. Then, just continue to hit it as you should cycle through the various soundtracks which are on your backup. I do not mean this to be insulting, as I suspect you knew this and tried this already. However, it never fails to make certain all of the basics have been covered...
I hope that perhaps something in the above will help you to narrow the issue.

If the above does not apply to your copy, you may ignore this entire post. However, if it does, then everything I wrote in my earlier post above does not apply.

Here is a snip from the very first user review at Amazon:
=== Begin snip here ===
"This very brief review is for this PREMIUM EDITION of DER UNTERGANG ONLY!"
"For some reason, this dvd is shown as Region 1, NTSC. It is also being sold as such. WARNING: IT IS NEITHER! I even queried a seller about this precise thing before purchase, and the seller assured me it was so. When the dvd arrived, however, everything was in German, which caused me /some/ pause. I know some of the language, and it said there were English subtitles, so I was feeling "okay" about it. Then I saw two things: something that looked like a DVD Code 9, and something that looked like a Region Code 2. I wasn't sure, but I took it home and popped it into my player anyway. And much to my chagrin, the dvd didn't work."
"The only "happy" news about this chain of events is that the seller seems to be making it easy for me to return the dvd. We'll see, as I'm mailing it back today. "

I recall having trouble with the movie "Sideways"....the European release. I had the same trouble as psgamer...I always ended up with the commentary track.

Thanks Guys for All your help. OK... As I mentioned before; I did an ENTIRE Back-up of DOWNFALL with Shrink, burned the ISO, put it in my DVD Player and EVERYTHING is EXACTLY as the Original.
Except that I ended up with a Sub-VHS quality copy (since I'm Burning to a 4.7GB DVD-R) The movie started with the GERMAN Soundtrack as it was intended to be, with English subtitles.
Bruce mentioned something in his post about: "There is an item somewhere in the settings (as I recall) that deals with this issue."mmmmmm...??? I am going to check settings in Shrink to see what what he is refering to. Oh!... and Bruce, This is NOT the Premium Edition of DOWNFALL. Thanks for the links. It helped in identifying my copy. By the way; About using FILE Vs ISO mode in Shrink. I usually use the FILE mode Only when I am going to do some VIDEO Editing. I open the FILE with NERO, Edit and then put the New (NERO) FILE into Shrink to create the ISO and Burn. When there's nothing to change, Though. I go straight to ISO.
I am going to keep trying to solve this issue, though. My GOAL is to retain the MAIN Movie with GERMAN dialogue ONLY and that way, maintain as much of the Video quality as possible.
Even though through this post I became aware that many other people have had this type of issues with Shrink; I believe that If Bruce was able to BACK UP his MAIN Movie successfully, then there may be a different approach that should be followed when dealing with Foreign Language movies.
Just out of curiosity; Bruce, if you use Shrink to create a FILE of the movie, What program do you use to create the Image File(ISO) to burn it ?
Thanks to ALL for your Help.

PS.I attached a scanned image of my copy of DOWNFALL for you to see. I didn't notice my scanner was set at 300DPI. SORRY for the large File.

You could also convert the movie to mpeg, demux and then reauthor it using just the soundtrack that you want. Use Shrink on the final product of that process.

convert the movie to mpeg, demux and then reauthor it using just the soundtrack that you want.
I'm not sure how to go about doing that, since I am no expert. Everything I know I learned through this WEBSITE and thanks to people like you all.
BobK... Can you direct me to the Info that will show me how to do what you're talking about? I'm always interested in learning new stuff.
Thanks. JP -

First get the entire disk on your HD if it's not still there (use DVDDecrypter, or DVDShrink with NO Compression).
Then open TDA, start a new project and click on the Source Wizard button. Find the folder where the files are located and open it. When the selection box comes up, if there's more than one title in the title list, select the main movie (usually the longest one). Then select the audio that you think you want (or uncheck the one you don't want if they're already checked) and click next.
Uncheck the box that says "Copy the selected titles to the hard disk drive"- no need to do that since the files are already on your HD, and click OK. When the edit box opens, click the 'Cut-Edit and Chaptering' button and play enough of the movie to be sure you have the correct sound track.
When you're done, click okay and go to the menu. Select "No Menu" and when done with the rest of the menu wizard, click the output button to create a new set of DVD files.
When the output is finished, use DVDShrink. -
Thanks again BobK... I'll follow your intruccions carefully and will explore the programs you mentioned (
It'll probably take me a while). I will start by checking the Soundtrack first to see if it is mislabeled as you indicated with Shrink. This should be fast and easy to do.
Thanks again for all your time and help
