I would like to edit out certain profanity from a movie, leaving the background audio intact. Is there a way to accomplish this without leaving a "dead" or blank spot in the movie?

    What is the recommended solution?

    Thank you.

Rip the DVD to your HDD using DVDFab Decrypter
Demux the audio from the DVD using PGCDemux
Edit the audio, if it's 5.1 AC3 with the speech in the center you should be able to keep the background audio. I think Nero Wave Editor supports ac3 editing.
Add it back to the original DVD using muxman, vobblanker

See https://www.videohelp.com/guides/simplistic-guide-for-replacing-dvd-streams-flash-id937#937 for details how to use pgcdemux and muxman.

However it is very rare that the centre channel contains only voice, or that the voice is only in the centre channel. You may also find that there are echoes in the other channels (particularly front left or right), and there may be other effects in the background of the centre. Don't expect your change to be seamless.

Also, do not cut the audio, just drop the volume in the area you want to remove.
