Thera are several ways to do this, personally I use Macromedia Flash to create titles and credits. There are also several authoring/editing tools that you can use... If there are any freeware tools I'm uncertain of, but you could try using the demo of Swish www.swishzone.com.

Another way to create a simple castlist might be to use the subtitler filter in Virtualdub, and create a .ssa subtitlefile containing your text. Should work if you like the style...

...or just make a sequence of .bmp files, open in Virtualdub and make an .avi...

Otherwise I'll have to refer to the commercial alternatives like Premiere et al...

Grab a 30-day demo of UVS6 at http://www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm, it has a title track with various efects, scrolling, crossfade, etc. It might be what you need, or it might not. You could always use it to make a scrolling title clip to append to a video file, if nothing else.
