I've been encoding SVCDs for a couple of weeks now (after finally getting a quality I was happy with!), but noticed something strange on my last encode.
I have a Win TV card, so after capturing need to field swap in virtualdub. On all my captures so far I have used "Field A first" for interlaced video and it's been fine. Now last night I encoded a file and then played it back only to find the field order was WRONG. After doing a test with Field order B this morning I find that it works OK.
So, is it normal for the field order to vary? I haven't changed anything between captures. Am I going to have to encode a sample first every time?
Any help appreciated
Nick

I'm not sure why it happens, but I also have a WinTV and most of the time it captures Bottom Field first. Every once in a while I end up with some video that is Top Field first - this only seems to happen when there are commercial breaks in the source - and only on some channels on my digital cable. The result is a capture with the field order flipped at various points through the file. The only solution then is to either encode the file as separate segments, split at the frames where the field order changes, or deinterlace and encode progressive.Originally Posted by nick1977
As I say, I've no idea why it happens or how to fix it, and it's thankfully rare. It's a different problem to the one you seem to have experienced, but it highlights the fact that it can happen. -
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
