I burned some DIVX, AVI and MPG files to a DVD and when I try to play them on my DVP642 it alternates between playing and displaying a solid blue screen. There is no rhyme or reason, sometimes it plays for 2 minutes then 10 seconds of blue screen, sometimes it alternates between the two. These discs are brand new and have NO scratches on them. I have tried two different players (17 and 37) with the same results.
Any tips?

avi is a VERY loose term.......basically it's a container that can hold a ton of differant types of video, i'd assume you probably have divx or xvid, in which case they arent compatable because of the settings.....

They will play, but there are some criteria they have to meet. Try reading this: http://www.jarnot.com/twiki/bin/view/Public/DVP642LisaBsAVIGuide

I think I solved the problem, or at least it seems that way. I unplugged the component cables and fed it through the regular composite and it seems to work fine. Anyone else had this issue?

like many owners.mine didn't last 6 months.
Philips is on my do not buy list. so thats one more issue -
I have a new LiteOn 1107HC1 recorder that will also play back divx and xvid. I have it hooked up to tv with component cables. I don't have any problems. Maybe you actually had a loose cable or one of the cables has a short in it.

My Philips DVP-642 died after only like 2 or 3 months of use ... and I didn't even use it "hard" at all in that time frame!
How is the Lite-On unit for DivX/XviD playback? That would really be my only reason for buying it as a cheap DivX/XviD playback solution. I already have a stand alone DVD recorder (Pioneer make).

Mine says it was made in August 2004. It's still going strong. Now if it was Apex we were talking about I couldn't agree more. All my old ones that started off the whole "defeat region encoding" controversy with the hidden menu have failed and are in the closet, broken.
The newer Liteon recorders seem to be following in the footsteps of so many other companies by getting their units on the shelves cheaper and cheaper by skimping on things like the LED display, etc. I'm wondering how long these will last in constant use. I now use the Daytek DP-30/Liteon 5001 as my workhorse machine even over my Panny E-80H (which still gets it's share of daily recordings without as much as a hiccup) but only after I upgraded the drive and popped the case for airflow to keep it cool, as well as doing the firmware upgrades. This is what it SHOULD have been but wasn't because of cost cutting... -
The LiteOn unit is a DVD recorder and cost was $99 on sale. Today is last day of sale. It does fine on dvix/xvid playback, but if I fast forward too much, the picture gets pixelated. That was not the reason for my buying it, just an added bonus. I usually convert to dvd format anyway. I'll be hooking back up my Sony for playback in a day or so and just use the LiteOn for the occasional recording.

I have 2 of the 642's, the oldest is almost 2 years old. Both work fine with no issues, and the oldest was getting almost daily use until I bought the Oppo 971H in December.
