  1. I am finding that after encoding with Tmpgenc (when producing VCD/SVCD's) the output video is fine, but the audio output just seems to have a rather low quality sound to it, it could be described as 'tinny'

Is there any way around this? perhaps using another encoder for the audio stream? if so, would there be issues with sync problems etc?

I use Vegas for 5.1 AC3, and sound forge for 2 channel ac3.

If you are on a budget, ffmpeggui does a good job for AC3.

Am I correct in thinking that AC3 cant be used on VCD/SVCD'S though?

you could convert to mpa/mp2 with ffmpeggui and compare it with the tmpgenc sound.
or use toolame as external audio encoder in tmpgenc.

  7. I would think it sounds like a bad Sample Rate Conversion.

If boing decides to try toolame as an external audio encoder he might as well try SSRC at the same time, as a external Sample Rate Converter.

It's too bad that ffmpeg can't be used with TMPGEnc in this manner. I've tried to trick TMPGEnc into using ffmpeg.exe as an external *.AC3 encoder with no luck at all. It's too bad there isn't a go-between application telling TMPGEnc it was encoding *.MP2 stream, while actually encoding to *.AC3. (of course this isn't really a concern of someone encoding to VCD/SVCD)

There's a mini-guide for configuring TMPGEnc Free or TMPGEnc Plus to use toolame and/or SSRC here:

I would make your life "easy" and just use the toolame and SSRC plug-ins for TMPGEnc Plus.

I've used them before and it's really easy to set up and the audio quality this way should be A-OK
