I'm new to the forums (registered awhile ago but haven't really posted much) and I just bought a Sony DRU-810 DVD writer. I haven't seen any DVD-R DL media anywhere. Anyone know if it's out and where I can get it? Price?

    Thanks.

    BTW, great site...

My local Walmart has the best local price for DL media. They are also the only local source with -r DL media. Staples is supposed to get -r DL media after the first of the year.

  3. Here in the UK, dual layer -R is quite a bit more costly than the +R equivalent - I don't know what it's like elsewhere in the world, but why insist on -R ?

I only ask because I've seen several firmwares are still at the "improve writability to DL-R" as far as recorders go, and one or two packages claiming -R is not supported yet. There are some decent +R dual layer manifacturers out there now and the price is beginning to come down.

I buy Dual Layer, Dual Format drives. I'm looking for -r DL media only because it's what the burners I buy are capable of. I'd rather not wait for a customer to return saying what I promised can't be done with the hardware I've provided especially if I can no longer return the item in question. Here in the States -r DL and +r DL is priced the same.

  5. It just strikes me as a bit odd you've found a writer that only records to Dual Layer -R... I've seen some +R's that required an update to use -R but never the other way around.

    Funky !

I didn't say they weren't capable of +r writing. I said Dual Layer / Dual Format. I won't buy any burner for anyone that is not capable of burning both(+ / -)DL out of the box. I also do not sell any product I haven't tested for proper usage after it's installed.

  7. I was still on about dual layer. Perhaps what I should have said is the first dual layer burners only had +R dual layer media media to play with. Of those recorders, many of them would have required a firmware update in order to allow them to use the dual layer -R that came about at a later date.

As such, my point was I would have been surprised if someone made a dual layer writer that would only write to dual layer, -R discs, which you have subsequently confirmed is NOT the case in your last post.

    Phew !

I don't believe there is a burner or recorder available that only does -r DL and not +r DL? Anyone know of one that does?

Pioneer's 53x, 633 are only -R DL. LG's standalone recorder is +R DL only. Sony has a new one that does both.

I thought the 633 was a single layer recorder with hard drive?

Sure does. After I read this I visit the PioneerElectronics.com website. Thanks for the info. This machine doesn't burn +r DL.
