I have the AC3 component for Quicktime. I've encoded some .avi files (both divx and Xvid) using Handbrake and ffmpegX with 5.1 AC3 audio. For some reason when I play the files in quicktime, the audio isn't there.

I think I used to have this working in the past, but I'm not positive.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks.

Well it appears that QT 7.02 broke the AC3 playback.

I'm surprised noone here had the same issue.

You can download the QT 7.01 re-intaller here:

This fixed the problem for me.

most of us AREN'T using Quicktime 7.01/7.02,
because they suck @$$. Many of us are still
using QT 6.52, unless you adopted using Toast 7
[macuser comes READILY to mind ], then you
had to move to QT 7.

QT 7 is getting to be Apple's big egg on the face lately....

I'm not so sure MOST aren't using QT 7. I installed it along with tiger as soon as they came out. This is really the only issue I've had. Maybe I'll set up a poll.

I also bought macuser25's highly touted video tool for all video. - Toast 7 -

Running the file through D-Vision will encode it with MP3 audio. I believe the AC3 component author knows about this issue.

    Thanks NarenFish.

I'd acutally prefer to keep the ac3 audio because (I believe) mp3 doesnt support 5.1 channels.

    Actually is that true?

There is a 5.1channel mp3 encoder/decoder available (that is based on the MPEG 2.5BC spec, as opposed to the usual 2 channel MPEG1/MPEG2 spec). It's from either Philips or Fraunhoffer (SP?). It is still quite experimental, even though the format has been officially ratified.

For all normal purposes though, mp3 should be considered 2channel. And in that case, AC3 would make more sense for 5.1--especially since you wouldn't need to reencode.

Hope that AC3 component gets updated soon, or QT7 fixed, or both.
