I'm considering getting a satellite personal video recorder receiver, but have two questions.
1. can you watch another channel while it's recording a channel?
2. let's say I want to transfer a recorded show on a dvd, can you hook up an external computer dvd recoder to make the transfer? Or do I make the transfer by a video capture device to laptop?
I apologize if the questions are newbish. Any help would be appreciated.

 1) you'll need a dual tuner reciever. tivo will do exactly what you're asking. the dish network 625 (which i have) is meant for 2 televisions, but it will work that way on one.. you just have to switch the inputs on your tv, which can be done with your remote. it's actually a bit more handy than tivo, but a bit more complicated.

 2) tivo has something call "tivo-to-go" which will do what i think you're asking.. the only other way to do it would be to hook up a standalone dvd recorder to the dvr, or remove the harddrives and remove the video.. which can become very complicated.
