  1. I have an mp3 file, its 6min 45sec long. However the song ends at 3:35, the rest is just silence. I want to cut off that last 3 minutes. I tried mp3trim but i get an error. any recomendations on other free tools?

    Try Audacity. It's freeware.

If your editing MP3 files, it's best to use an editor designed to work with MP3's like the one Huiwinsun suggested. Using an audio editor like Audacity isn't a good idea as it will further degrade the quality of the MP3 when it re-encodes it.

mp3trim works pretty good also, it's freeware and you could cut out the silence automatically - real easy to use

Definitely. All the free tools available besides this one will degrade your MP3 even further than it already has been when it was compressed into MP3 form.
