Well, you could sit there with your finger on the STOP button and hope that you time the start of the commercial properly, then create another capture file name while the commercial is in progress and hope that you time hitting the START button properly. Then, you'll have to stitch your segments together somehow.

Or, you could just record the whole thing, commercials and all, then edit what you don't want out like the rest of us.

  3. There's no magic solution to record without commercials. The capture device has no way of knowing what is a commercial and what is the program content. Even if it could, it wouldn't be clean, especially recording from network TV, where some commercials are coming from the broadcast operations center, and some coming from the local affilliate's master control.

Just record the entire program -- commercials and all, and then edit them out later.

Take a look at VideoReDo. You still need to capture with commercials and then edit them out. But... you have two options.

First, you could use the AdDetective to try to find the commercials for you.

Or, you can actually start editing the file while you are still recording. You can start/stop and move around to mark the cuts you want as the file is being saved and then write out the clean program a minute after it's done being recorded.

  6. I think Tivo just did time-shifting, allowing you to fast forward past commericials. But according to this article, Tivo now has ads. I remember back in VHS days, they were talking about a device that would detect commercials. Broadcasters also could easily add a signal to their commercials so it could be detected.

Just for the info, once upon a time, at some European stations, they use to broadcast a signal each time they had commercials. I remember some VCRs from the early 90s with this feature.

Does anyone else remember this technology? I think my old good Sharp VCR support it (it is called VPC/PDC ?)
I remember a Sony VCR stoped taping the commercials from certain stations (RAI UNO, RTL, and I believe TVE?). The info was hidden on a teletext page...
