Sorry but this is going to require a long explanation. I hope someone will have the patience to read all this and give some advice.

I’ve prepared a movie which is too large for a DVD5 disc. I decided it was time to use a DVD9 but can’t get it to burn. I put the Dual Layer disc in the burner (BENQ DVD DD DW1620) and started CopyToDVD the same way I’ve always done with the DVD5 discs.

This is what I see on the CopyToDVD Manager window:

Then I click on the Write button. For a few seconds it says it is writing and then suddenly I get this error message:

Can anyone tell me what this error means?

I decided to use another method so I output an ISO file with ImgTool Classic and then tried burning that with DVD Decryptor. When I switched DVD Decryptor’s Mode to ISO > Write I got this dialog box:

Maybe the information on the right can tell someone what the problem is.

This is a shot of the same box with the info box showing text further down:

Another shot with the rest of the information:

When I selected the file to write and hit the Write button I got this error box:

Any idea what this error is?

This is the top portion of the DVD Decryptor log:

This is the rest of the log:

Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong? Do the error boxes tell you anything? I’ve used 3 discs trying to get this to work and I don’t even know if I’ve made coasters of them or if they are still good. How can I tell? If I understand the information box in DVD Decryptor the discs are empty and still usable. Is this true? Would very much appreciate any help with this.

    Thanks a lot,

    .....Gord

    First of all,

Get rid of the crappy discs. Verbatim makes error free dual layer discs in my experience. Go with those and see if you have the same problem. If you do, then you can at least rule out the discs.

It might be worth while changing firmware for your burner.Compatability issues with ritek D01 discs are upgraded with modified firmware on some burners.

If the size of your project is only 4.87 GB, then just use dvdshrink to resize it. Dual layer disks are too expensive to waste all that space.

The discs were sold under the Memorex brand name and I've never had
any trouble at all with the DVD5 discs they sell.

Also, they are the only brand available in my area. I'm in a small city and there isn't a great deal of choice.

I agree and it worked fine with DVDShrink but the project is not finished and when it is it will be much larger. I just wanted to see if I'd have trouble with dual layer discs. I did (obviously) and now I just want to know what to do to correct the problem.

Thanks, all of you, for the input. I'll see if there is a new firmware and get back with the results.

In the meantime does anyone else have any insight to offer? Also, nobody said whether the error reports categorically tell whether the discs are still good or have gone to Coaster Hell. Anyone?

Thanks again to everybody for helping. Turns out the problem was the discs. I tracked down a Verbatim disk and it worked right away.

Here is a link to modified firmware and flashers for benq drives. The latest ones will give support to ritek d01 discs.
I flashed my nec 3540 for ritek support and so far no coasters with memorex or ritek d01 unbranded.

Thanks!! I hate trying to read posts from people without enough information. I do try to be thorough enough to be understood. I appreciate your noticing.
