I first want to say thanks for all the useful information that this forum provides. I usually like to do the reading and less asking of questions, but this one is a question that I really don't have a clue about.
I am graduating from college (University of Washington) in about a week and I want to buy software at cheap academic prices. I hope to get a job doing video/media work and I would like to know which software package would be the most valuable for me to know.
I currently am using Premiere 6.5 and have about 300 hours experience using it. I have used Avid Express DV for about 5 hours and have never used Vegas. I only have enough money for one package.
I am a PC guy so FCP is out. I don't care about learning new interfaces or what I am used to; I can learn new things. I am leaning towards the Adobe Video Collection because it includes AFter Effects which is also an industry standard, but Avid is the standard editor used. Which will look best on my resume?
Thanks for all the help you can provide and if you want to know more information I can provide that to you.

Avid and FCP are the only industry standard packages on that list, followed closely by FCP. Vegas and Premiere are nice, but they aren't used in TV stations or large studios. What will look best is a reel showing your editing skills, and a resume that shows you aren't limited to one package, but adaptable and able to produce quality regardless of platform.

Thanks for the input. So it sounds like Avid Xpress DV Pro may be the best way to go if I want to be considered a professional. I do know that a good reel is much more important. Any other advice would be much appreciated in this decision. Thanks.

You know... I don't think it really matters. What they want is someone with some good vision. That is good on all levels.. they have no problem teaching you there stuff if you seem like a good boy. lol

I work at a Television Network. Not TV station there is a difference. One is local the other is national., But anyway you need to have experience with Avid more than FCP. you need at least 5 years. I would take every class that Avid is giving, it'll cost you but you get that back. Also you NEED to know After Effects & Photoshop. The rest is History.
