    Hi,

I got this software that captures from the TV. Anyway, when it captures it make the file really big and is that what it does or are you able to make it smaller when capturing also? How would I be able to make the .avi file a lot smaller to where it would fit on a CD-R also? Please and thank you. The hardware came with Studio 9. I have been using virtualdub for editing though because it is easier for me to understand. Would it be able to fit on a .avi if I changed the codec to XVID with virtualdub to fit on a CD-R or would I have to change numbers or something like that? Please and thank you.

Yep, use mp3 audio compression and use xvid or divx compression.

change the bitrate to get lower sizes, you can use a bitrate calculator to get exact output size.

Or use Dr.DivX or Autogk and you just set the output size and convert.

If you only plan to watch the video on the computer (Or if you have a standalone DIVX player), XVID or DIVX may be a good option.

I'm not sure what AVI type you are capturing with, but XVID is one of the more compact codecs with decent quality. Start with the default settings and play with it a little.

I'm no expert on XVID settings, but there are plenty of guides that can tell you what the different settings do.

The XVID codec, when opened in VirtualDub, has configuration settings that are easy to use and a bitrate calculator to help fit the video onto a CD.

EDIT: Baldrick seems to be one step ahead of me today.

    Hi,

oh ok thanks so much. I will change the audio also. I used studio 9 to capture. What is a good capturing software that catures with the audio and video that I pick instead of make it so big and so I would be able to burn it to a CD-R after it is done capturing instead of haveing it too big and having to change the format and everything? Please and thank you.

Well, best would be to capture directly to XVID if that's what you want to put on CD. Unless you have a fast computer, that's not easy.

What capture card are you using? And what codec?

The information that came with your capture card should tell you all this.

    Hi,

I have a very fast computer. I just got it. I have a ATI to capture, and it uses its default codec like PCM or something like that. I am able to capture direct with XVID, how, is that with virtualdub or a different software? Please and thank you.

You might want to take a look at lord smurf's site. He has a lot of info on ATI cards and capturing with them. http://www.digitalfaq.com/

I don't use a ATI card, but his site should help.

Sorry, there is a lot of reading and studying with this hobby.

You can see what capture codec you are using by running the captured video through AVIcodec or Gspot.

Also, look through the 'Capture' guides to the left under 'How to..'
