he just turned 78 a few days ago.. i figured they would have went for a younger pope.. i'm guessing we'll be going through this whole "dead pope" thing again..

lets not make this religious, it is big news and something that can be discussed without getting this thread locked.

They were saying on the news that this Pope was going to be more of a transitional one and they were going to choose an older man.
    His name was MackemX

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

He was an interesting choice. As usual, the "experts" who made predictions were wrong. Since membership in the Catholic Church is making great growth strides in Africa and Latin America, a lot of people thought the next Pope would be from one of those 2 continents. And, there were those who were certain that Cardinals would vote their "roots" ... that the next Pope would be Italian. But, the one prediction I heard that did come true was that they'd select an older Pope. There was a lot of fear in Church hierarchy along the same lines as with FDR ... that Popes who stay in office for the long haul tend to devolop dangerous power-circles. Of course, John Paul II didn't do that. But from now on, I think will see a string of "interim" Popes about the same age. That will be easy since the average age of Cardinals is 75 (source). Even the youngest Cardinal, Peter Erdo in Hungary, is 53.

I have my own predictions for Pope Benedict XVI. All Popes are, by their nature, conservative. Yet John Paul II was seen as a concilliator ... someone who tried to bring all Catholics together. It's why I think he was so popular. Benedict XVI, however, gave a fire-and-brimstone speech on "moral relativism" prior to is ascendency. If he meant what he said in that speech, I suspect we'll see a lot of priests being excommunicated for even advocating things like gay marriage, contraception, and married or female priests. Liberal Catholic clergymen might want to start packing their bags now. Pope Benedict XVI, to me, seems like a "my way or the highway" kind of Pope.

    @ AlecWest,
I am just quoting facts. Recently, the Episcopal Church allowed gay priests. The whole church got split into pieces...

How soon before he is commonly referred to as Pope Adolf? And I'm still looking for pictures of him in his WW2 German uniform.

Exactly. It was an issue that polarized the Episcopal Church. But in the Catholic Church, where sexuality itself is supposed to be held in check by priestly vows, the issue is even more keen ... especially since all the big molestation scandals involved Priests and young boys.

    From Embassy Online:

Elected yesterday afternoon is Pope Benedict XVI - the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, a German whose reputation as the Vatican's most influential conservative won him the feared title, "the Hammer" among liberal Catholics and liberation theologians.

Yet his friends and supporters, including Calgary Bishop Fred Henry, say he is far more conciliatory and compassionate than his reputation suggests. Some say the 78-year-old prelate, who had been the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under John Paul II, had won a reputation as the church's hard-line doctrinal watchdog only because he occupied that chair - keeping in mind that the job in centuries past was responsible for the Inquisition. Cold comfort.
I suspect "the Hammer" earned his nicknamed-title ... and that John Paul II gave him his position at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for a reason. Zealots are put into positions where zealots are best suited ... and I suspect the last paragraph above is "wishful thinking" on the part of those who feared him when he was only a Cardinal.

Time will tell. The Papacy may awaken him to "new ways" of thinking about things. On the other hand, it may embolden him to carry out a modern-day "Inquisition" to purge the Church of clergy he feels are not accepting doctrine and dogma by rote.

We're calling him the Panzer Cardinal I think. There's a picture of him in his Hitler Youth costume in the papers today.

You might remember the song "Nostradamus" as sung by Al Stewart. One of the lyric lines was:
Three leagues from the gates of Rome a Pope named Pol is doomed to die...
Obviously, he was using the "translation" of this quatrain by Nostradamus:
Pol mensolee mourra trois lieuës du rosne,
Fuis les deux prochains tarasc destrois:
Car Mars fera le plus horrible trosne,
De coq & d aigle de France freres trois.
as interpreted by Erika Cheetham in her book. Cheetham said that the death of Pope John Paul II would signal the beginning of the end-times ... and that the next Pope to follow would be the "dark pope" (evil). But other interpretations say this evil pope will come after the death of John Paul's successor.

Hehehe, it would be interesting if the next Pope was Cardinal Arinze. Being an African, he really WOULD be a dark pope ... though not in the sense of the word that most Nostradamus interpreters would use. Of course, the interpreters could be wrong (grin). Nostradamus was a druggie, anyway.

Oh, no ... it's TRUE! Joe Pesci is the new Pope. They just fattened him up a little bit and added a bit of makeup:

And, he's likely the "dark pope" mentioned by some doomsayers. A good friend of George Carlin, Joe Pesci was mentioned in his "There Is No God" comedy routine.

We'll, we'll have to look for the telltale signs that he's slipping back in to his Leo Getz role of the "Lethal Weapon" films. If, during the Pope's next speech, he says, "And now, a reading from the book of John ... OK, OK, OK, let's make that Peter," then we'll know for sure.

Possibly. I don't take too much notice really. Has he spent all his life in a uniform ?

Now that he is elected, let him do his job. Not an easy task of uniting left, right and centre.

    @VCDHunter,
These are not so kind words.
