well the new pope has been announced, zee german joseph ratzinger (aka "benedict xvi")
he just turned 78 a few days ago.. i figured they would have went for a younger pope.. i'm guessing we'll be going through this whole "dead pope" thing again..
lets not make this religious, it is big news and something that can be discussed without getting this thread locked.

He was an interesting choice. As usual, the "experts" who made predictions were wrong. Since membership in the Catholic Church is making great growth strides in Africa and Latin America, a lot of people thought the next Pope would be from one of those 2 continents. And, there were those who were certain that Cardinals would vote their "roots" ... that the next Pope would be Italian. But, the one prediction I heard that did come true was that they'd select an older Pope. There was a lot of fear in Church hierarchy along the same lines as with FDR ... that Popes who stay in office for the long haul tend to devolop dangerous power-circles. Of course, John Paul II didn't do that. But from now on, I think will see a string of "interim" Popes about the same age. That will be easy since the average age of Cardinals is 75 (source). I have my own predictions for Pope Benedict XVI. All Popes are, by their nature, conservative. Yet John Paul II was seen as a concilliator ... someone who tried to bring all Catholics together. It's why I think he was so popular. Benedict XVI, however, gave a fire-and-brimstone speech on "moral relativism" prior to is ascendency. If he meant what he said in that speech, I suspect we'll see a lot of priests being excommunicated for even advocating things like gay marriage, contraception, and married or female priests. Liberal Catholic clergymen might want to start packing their bags now. Pope Benedict XVI, to me, seems like a "my way or the highway" kind of Pope.

Exactly. It was an issue that polarized the Episcopal Church. But in the Catholic Church, where sexuality itself is supposed to be held in check by priestly vows, the issue is even more keen ... especially since all the big molestation scandals involved Priests and young boys.Originally Posted by pchan

Hehehe, it would be interesting if the next Pope was Cardinal Arinze. Being an African, he really WOULD be a dark pope ... though not in the sense of the word that most Nostradamus interpreters would use. Of course, the interpreters could be wrong (grin). Nostradamus was a druggie, anyway. -

And, he's likely the "dark pope" mentioned by some doomsayers. A good friend of George Carlin, Joe Pesci was mentioned in his "There Is No God" comedy routine.
We'll, we'll have to look for the telltale signs that he's slipping back in to his Leo Getz role of the "Lethal Weapon" films. If, during the Pope's next speech, he says, "And now, a reading from the book of John ... OK, OK, OK, let's make that Peter," then we'll know for sure.
