You can try dgpulldown, convert the video to 720x576 with 23.967fps and then add pulldown so it playback at 25 fps. No need to change the audio then.

But remember that many tvs in europe supports NTSC...so it may not be necessary to convert to PAL.

  3. well, you need a licensed ac3 encoder. i actually do what you are trying to do. and its not too much hard work actually very easy.

i assume you got an avi with ac3 5.1 soundtrack.. You have to demux that file, then open it up in besweet, select convert to 6 mono wav files, and in the main dialog, make sure preset (convert ntsc 23.976fps to 25fps) is selected.

it will take a while to write out the 6 slightly spedup wav's out, and then what i do, is load them individually into sony vegas. i have a licensed ac3 encoder there, and just write it out as 5.1 dolby digital file.

you could use the besweet ac3 5.1 one, but i don't trust the output quality. in the past, it was always too quiet for my liking, and you couldn't set good settings.

  6. sony vegas is a non linear editor, and its quite pricey, especially with the ac3 encoder package

That's exactly what I meant with "Too much hard work" (Not to mention the $525...)

I have done this numerous times and it's not that much hard work.

The process I follow (to keep the AC3 5.1 audio) is:

    1. Take the DVD through DVDShrink, reauthor to keep only the movie, select the audio and sub tracks I want to keep and set compression to none. Save the resulting single movie DVD structure to disk.

    2. Demux the DVD VOB files with DVDDecrypter or SmartRipper to create a single large VOB file with only the VIDEO and Audio track(s).

    3. Open the VOB file with VirtualDUB MOD.

    4. Use VirtualDUB filters to resize to 720x576 (Lancos) and set the frame rate to 25fps. Select "No Audio" in Audio Settings. Save the movie (now PAL no audio) in AVI using good codec. I would use either hufyuv or DivX 5.1 with constant quality and a setting of 2. Will produce a 4~8 Gb file.

    5. Use BeSweet to open the same large VOB file, convert audio from 23.976 to 25fps saving as AC3.

    6. Use an MPEG2 encoder (Tmgenc, CCE, MainConcept) to encode the DVD using appropriate bitrate settings (I use CCE with 1+3 pass VBR and a bitrate to fit the movie duration. Rule of thumb is 4800kbps for 2 hours).

    7. Use DVDLab to author the DVD using the MPEG2 video and the AC3 audio files.

    8. If subtitles are to be kept, I rip them with SubRip in .srt format and import these to DVDLab. (a bit of work, especially the OCR training plus some spelling and spacing checks.).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

too much work for the user? or the computer

yeah the price of vegas/ac3 plugin is high, but its well worth it once you unleash the power!!

does that keep the 5.1 or re-enc to 2.0????

Using BeSweet GUI (v.0.6), I can select as output "AC3" to use AC3Enc.

Initially, I thought that it would preserve the 5.1 channel audio, however it appears that Azid, step 2, will downconvert all to 2 channel sttereo.

Sorry about the mis-information. Should have tried it myself before...
