how come when i zipped up a folder in winzip it came out smaller than the folder..but usually when i zip up folders they come up the same size??

Zip programs are compression utilites. The main reason to use one is to reduce the filesize. What happens is that some things get better compression than others. You can look at the files in the Zip archive through winzip and see their compression ratio. For example, text files or bitmap images are like raw data and can be compressed quite a bit. JPEG images are already compressed using and image compression scheme so when you zip them you'll see minimal if any size difference.
