Hi all, I have been frequenting this place for info for a while and finally registered. It has always been a great resource. I have done some extensive searching and I am wondering how I can do 2 things ( not necessarily at once ).

    1. I would like to grab a portion of a dvd, like if I just want a scene or a small clip, there are many reasons I want to do this, the most for grabbing portions of my home video dvd's for use in editing, I don't want to have to rip the whole thing. Also, I like to rip pieces of dvd's that may be encrypted as well. just for fun, to have scenes I like locally on my computer. anyway - I am aware rof a program called video redo, where you pick an an in and an out and it turns that part into an mpeg.

So, first of all are there any others that do this, the problem with videoredo is that the size is quite high. I would like to compress the file to a smaller size. in case i want to share with family on the web.

So in conclusion, Id like to be able to rip in and out points only, and compress at the same time. If I cannot do both, can someone also suggest the best program to compress only to a smaleer size which is fast and easy to use ( free or not )

    thanks

DVD Fab Platinum will allow you to grab a chapter, but no smaller, and will rip and convert to a number of formats. While I use DVDFab HD Decrypter for ripping, I am not a fan of it's encoding. Similarly, I use Womble for mpg editing, but it mpeg-4 encoding is also not very good.

If you want the best results, I would suggest AnyDVD with DVD Shrink in re-author mode to rip. This will let you rip down to the GOP level. Then use AutoGK to encode it to Xvid for transporting elsewhere.

If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you could also try AnyDVD and Virtualdubmpeg-2 or AVI Demux for ripping and converting in one go.

    1. YOu can use dvd shrink in the reauthoring mode to cut out a clip directly from a dvd. It wont work with newer dvds though, you must then either install anydvd($) or rip with dvdfab decrypter(free).

If you use DVDFab HD Decrypter or DVDFab Platinum you are restricted to chapter level cuts. DVD Shrink can do GOP level cuts (every 12 - 18 frames, depending on the disc)

If you use AnyDVD and AVI Demux or Virtualdubmpeg2 you can cut anywhere you like, but you must use AnyDVD, as this is the tool removing the protection, and you must re-encode.
