    Hi poppelooi,

Load all them VOBs, in the sequence you want them to appear in, into an authoring tool that accepts VOBs (like TMPGEnc DVD Author, but there are others) and then author them with or without menus.

If the VOBs are from a ripped DVD, depending on the ripping tool, you can rip to one large VOB.

    Carpe diem.

  5. I use DVD Decryptor. It does a great job.

  6. I just use the command window for this on my PC:

    copy /b vts_01_01.vob + vts_01_02.vob + vts_01_03.vob BigOne.vob

On my HP C3000 unix workstation:

    cat vts_01_01.vob vts_01_02.vob vts_01_03.vob > BigOne.vob

This takes time so be patient.

Did I mention that I'm happy Carly is gone! I used to work at HP and left because of her.

Why would one want to do that?

  8. I do it so that I can reauthor a DVD using Ulead MovieMaker 2. I use DVDShrink to extract the movies or extras that I want. Then I simply rename the .vob files to .mpg and load them into the Ulead tool. If a movie or extra is greater than 1Gbyte I sting the vobs together to make one file.

By the way this version of MovieMaker allows me to push AC3 audio through as long as I don't ask it to trim or reencode the video.

It results it very nice looking DVDs with just what I want on them.

  9. Why would one want to do that?
One reason that I know of (and have experienced) is that sometimes in some mpeg editors there is a tiny but noticeable gap of a few missing frames between .vobs.

Ripping as one file prevents this. Programs like Smart File Joiner can do this but DVDDecrypter does it much faster.

Maybe he want's easy editing of the VOB files. Some programs can't process mulltiple VOB files. MPEG2VCR for example. Otherwise you get nasty blocking/errors when you load the VOB's as seperate files.
But to join the VOB's on the PC the easy way just use the Total Commander tool. Get it at www.ghisler.com
Just select the first VOB and use the join commando on it.

Well, VOB's aren't meant to be edited, they are a very special video DVD kind of files (that contain mpeg video, some kind(s) of audio, and usually a subtitles stream).
That said, even mpg isn't really the ideal material for editing.

  12. True, but certain mpeg editors like MPEG Video Wizard do a very good job of enabling them to be edited. And in the growing trend of encoding on standalone hardware units and then ripping to PC, editing, authoring and re-burning, it's very useful to be able to edit them.

The only SmartRipper I know is v2.41 that has a golden disc for it's icon - I don't know whether it's from Gordian Knot or not (no pun intended).

Assuming we're talking about the same one, I have to say that I've never done what you want to do, but what I'm about to suggest makes sense to me and seems like it'll do the job.

    1. Insert DVD.
    2. Open SmartRipper and let it read the files.
    3. Click "Settings" - A window appears with two tabs: "Movie" and "Files / Backup"
    4. Click on to "Movie" tab - Shows three columns of options.
    5. In 2nd column, "File-Splitting", select "max-filesize" and set the "max-filesize" setting lower down to 9,000Mb - More than the size of a dual layer DVD.
    6. Rip away...

Like I say, intuitively this should work. If not, or if you have problems, I know that DVDDecrypter can also do what you want.

    Hope that helps. Good luck...

Surely the easiest is to rip to one big VOB in the first place? No need to merge anything then...

If you by "standalone hardware units " mean DVD recorders, that's one hell of a roundabout way to solve something done much simpler (and cheaper) with TV capture card like ATI AIW, Hauppage PVR & cetera!
