The biggest problem with burning and getting skippy discs, I have found, is power. The power supply to your computer and whatever you play the disc on are important in determining how successful you will be in making a smooth-playing disc. Or playing a disc back smoothly. In this crummy town I am stuck in, the power supply is one of those bad jokes that nobody laughs at. Getting anything to play can be a real challenge at best.

    You have probably been lucky.

I regret to say that I have bought a couple of bootlegs in my time. Each one is on a cheap crappy media. Most of them (man this sounds like i have loads...I dont :P ) play no problem, be it in my PC (either drive) in my PS2 or in my standalone.
One of them played once and never played again.

However, different media, different PC setup, different Standalone etc etc all affect the compatability. I suspect most media will play in most drives, but no one media will play in all drives.

Some people are lucky in that their drive will play anything (apart from the one-play disc, i have only ever had problems with physical marks on the discs) whereas other people have problems.

The Bootleggers will always use cheap disc to maximise their profits, knowing that the majority of people they sell to will be able to watch the discs. The small proportion that have a problem wont buy any more, but why should the Bootleggers care, there will unfortunately always be a market for such copies.

i've seen a picture in the news papers of some of the computers used by small time pirates here. they were caught red handed (and hands slicky) burning pornos by the authorities , ive noticed that they got 5-10 CD writers/burners in one CPU...how is this possible?

how many writers/burners could one CPU support?
is this not too much for the power supply?

I was in Malaysia on business and it is supposed to be the world capital for "fakes". You can get anything from rolex watches to clothes to dvds to software. The software stores are just in the shopping mall out in a regular store selling microsoft office for $4, etc... Also any dvd or crappy vcd you can imagine can be found in the outside market for cheap. Just dont bring any drugs into the country. It is life in prison for even the smallest amount of drug possesion.

  11. Being a former worker at an airport and having ramp (for those of you that know what that is) access, I had to deal with U.S. Customs (Homeland now) on a daily basis.

Every now and then it was required of me to be in their area, and I was able to seecontraband they had aquired...everything from cds, dvds, clothing, jewerly etc....

From their statements usually the quality of the contraband was based on the size and money behind the persons doing the reproduction. Crappy goods was usually the product of amateurs while the gooood stuff had deep roots to organized crime etc.

To make a long story even longer, alot of the stuff conficated was already stolen and being redirected, so its kinda hard to say that the bad guys always used this or that batch of supplies. They would use what they could steal, extort or otherwise scam to raise the profit levels of their industry.

I don't think we've seen the cleaver ones purchacing in bulk from www.buyourcheapblankdvds.com so its hard to say its done the same way, or with the same equipment, blah blah from each group or each location they have to move to.
