I have recently purchased the Plextor ConvertX M402U for the purposes of converting VHS to DVD. Have tried a few times with the bundled software, and having been disappointed with the results, I now implore this board to help a humble soul in search of practical answers.

Obviously, I would like to be able to transfer my movie with as little loss in quality as possible. So far though, I have not been able to illiminate some of the problems I have seen.

Wavy lines on the bottom border, that do not appear on my television, but do on the file I capture, and a general loss of quality when converting to MPEG-4 HQ or MPEG-2 HQ formats.

I am using gold plated RCA cables, new USB plugs, and S-video, but this doens't really help.

I would like a walkthrough, as I have fortunate to receive in the past on seperate issues, but any and all feedback is appreciated.

    Much love!

When you burn this to DVD it will not show up on your T.V its overscan,Try to play the file in WinDVD , it handles Overscan better.

Makes sense. I did notice the wavy lines are diminished, but not gone completely. The last time I did make a dvd straight from the vhs through the plextor, I did see the lines on my TV.

    Anything on the picture quality?

  4. I too have been moving VHS to DVD with a new plextor m402u. Mine seems to look fine if I use the MPEG2- HQ setting.

I think you will always get the lines along the bottom when played as an mpeg, but when encoded to dvd, I don't see them (at least on a tv).

I have an atholon xp 2000 and a gigabyte motherboard. Make sure your machine is fast enuf, and dont do anything else while capturing.

You didn't say what kind of problems you are having in particular. ??

I really like the device, but am not happy with the fact that you can only make non-interlaced videos which is not supported by pinnacle studio.

(however, I guess NI is better? anyone?)
