Best quality ripping and encoding method.

Hi,

Sorry to say I am anal about my DVD's and especialy ones I purchased that have movies I loved as a kid.

I recently bought some of the re-released Godzilla films and want to back them up. I tried using DVD decryptor to rip the discs and DVD shrink to fit them onto a single 4.7gig DVDR. The problem is they seem to get screwed up somewhere in the process. Either I will get lots of digital pixels/blocks all over the picture and/or the picture will stop for a split second then go and then repeat. Then sometimes the disc will stop playing altogether right in the middle.

I can only assume this is occurring during the encoding process. I really do not care how long it takes to encode the disc down I just want quality and to preserve ALL the contents.

Could be media also causing the skipping. If you're anal about quality and want to keep everything, then maybe you should look at either burning to DL or splitting to 2 discs IMO.

Jim's right on. Sounds like bad media or a bad burn. Have you tried using Shrink by itself? You don't need to use Decrypter to rip.... using Shrink for the whole process saves you a step or two. Once in a blue moon a disc will will come along that Shrink won't rip, but Decrypter will. That's basically the only time I use it.

Ok, so then what constitutes good media? Is this a brand thing? I currently have tried Dynex (my companies home brand), Fuji and Memorex. All in both + and -. ANd I have used them due to cost. I have always had great luck with TDK but they are some of the more expensive.

there are some 101 items that you need to look at:

1. Bad Media (as mentioned earlier)
2. Have your HD('s) been defragged lately. Might want to use a dedicated hard drive for ripping and burning
3. Are you doing anything on the computer (or are other unnecessary processes running)
4. Burn at a slower (preferably 1x) and use dvdecrypter to burn and not nero

Those I believe are the top 4 items for ensuring a good result. Is your pc up to snuff? Do you have tons o' crap running on it, etc?

Also, dvdsrink is a TRANSCODER not an ENCODER. IF you want the BEST quality, if the little thing in shrink doesnt say 100%, split it between disks. If you want to keep it to 1 disk regardless, then you'll probably want to use an encoder.

Just curious, is this one of the Godzilla box sets? I have one and THEY used really crap media, single layer even. They played like crap and I backed them up on TY media and now they play well. The one time I can say that my backups are absolutely better than my originals!

Ok, I think I understand the difference. So how would I go about encoding/re-encoding a whole disc? Is there a way to do this in a similar fashion?

Yes the second Godzilla "Mega Monster" 5 pack. Now I wish I had waited as they are re-releasing them as single DVD's and are remastered with 5.1 surround.

I think dvd-Fab is an all in one. I would look at the conversion section from dvd to dvd-r

That might actually make things worse rather than better, especially with the higher speed media (8x-16x) out now, I'd burn at the rated speed, on GOOD (NOT BAD) media Fujifilm Made In Japan (Taiyo Yuden), and Maxell Made In Japan among others are usually of top quality - if you see media at the same price, I would tend to buy media that says "Made In Japan" on the label over "Made In Taiwan", though there are many decent Taiwanese manufactured blanks as well...

Try splitting the DVD in half or sections and not transcoding.
