OK I am trying to transfer a miniDV tape to PC using WinDV (for that matter I have tried other capture programs with the same result)

Problem: No matter where I cut it there is corruption (wavy pattern-sound is garbled) in the first scene selection. WinDV automatically makes separate AVI files from this 1hr tape. The first one the sound is always missing. The other 4 are OK. I pull it up in Gspot and it is OK.

    suggestions???

No idea but its always good practice to put about a minute of black on the start of the tape to allow the editor to pre-roll and to avoid end of tape issues like stretches and worst case, oxide scrapes.
