  1. Hi, Can someone tell me if i can extract the Audio from a DVD and convert it to a different type ie - ac3 to mp2.
If so can i make the audio a smaller file size, the reason being is i have a DVD that is a little larger than a standard size blank DVD so rather than lose picture quality i would rather lose a bit of quality with the audio

Re-author it with DVDShrink. You can lower the audio quality.

  4. Hmmmm, just tried the above advice but unfortunately it would not let me add compression to the audio - only video, unless im missing something obvious

  5. who said you can "lower the audio quality" with shrink. DVD Shrink only compresses video but not audio. you have to use a different program. try doing a search at the "tools" <----

    exactly.

I take it you have the audio as a separate file ? If so, feed this file through besweet and convert to a lower-bitrate MP2.
    If in doubt, Google it.

before you send him away screaming...

he was told, although falsely, by Kurt S in the first reply that he could lower the audio quality using DVD Shrink. I know how it may fill some of you with joy to pin a forum transgression on him, but a simple read of the thread will expose the answer to the question:

who said you can "lower the audio quality" with shrink.

Although it would be proper to read through the tools first (assuming of course you already know your way around the site and back again before posting, a bit of a tall order), it would be equally as proper to read the thread before posting.

I read it as "convert ac3 to mp2, making the filesize smaller ..."

besweet -> ac3 to mp2 -> lower the bitrate = smaller file size.

As mentioned, there are plenty of audio tools in the tools section that can do the same thing.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    ac3 to mp2
if the AC3 source is 2.0 this transcoding won´t be very effective ~> the 'hearable' bitrate is close the same the filesize, too!
    AC3 5.x (@384~448 KBs) to MP2 2.0 (@192 KBs) might be more interesting

Another idea is to split the VOBs in two DVDs with dvdfab or others

Yes, ok I was wrong and said Shrink would do it. I appologize and am willing to be sent to the depths of hell for my mis-information.

  11. It's not worth the headache.

You're gonna demux DVD, reencode the audio stream at a lower bitrate, remux with the new audio file, then author a new dvd. All for what? to save 50Megs (max) of space. Just run it through DVD Shrink and sacrafice a litle (very little) video quality.

  12. Ha, Thanks guys for the input, its been a little amusing watching my Original Question get more and more misinterpreted, Ha.
But seriously thanks for the input and it was just an idea of creating a smaller file size without losing picture quality, yet as you said the work involved to save a little space is greater than the final result is worth.

    Thanks again guys...
