Better title would be what NOT to stop for XP

As we said earlier, all Win9X based systems are easy. Just use cntl-al-del and stop EVERYTHING except EXPLORER.

    XP is a bit different.

Here is what I have found.

    Do not stop the following
DEVLDR32.EX or TASKMGR (Its what your using for CNTL ALT DEL)
    EXPLORER
    ALL SVCHOST's must stay
SYSTEM and SYSTEM Idle must stay

    Non-stoppable critical
    LSASS
    WINLOGON
    CSRLSS
    SMSS

Lastly, NACAPSVC will not stop as I THINK it is a NORTON nav file hook tied to the new SVC call.

After stopping all but the above, I was able to view files, opened and used MYFLIX, TPMG and ULEAD.

One note I found interesting. If you look at the performance tab on TASK MANAGER BEFORE stopping, you get an occassional spoke, but mostly flat line. After stopping all else, it went into DEFIBULATION (LOL) and had a steady sine wave pattern. That says to me something was looking for something else (steady polling).

Hope this helps some folks. At least you KNOW now what NOT to stop so you don't get the dreaded built in message that your system will now shutdown in 45 seconds and please logoff.

    for me, based on hear-say,

I'll stick with windows 98 for
a another year or so. I'm
sure xp will be requireing some
thing like 128mb of ram, which is
    all I got (and need)
You can keep hte bells and whistles
    ie, colors, pictures, desktop look
    etc.
