I am doing some capture from the tv. I would like to use the s-video input on the a/d convertor. But how can I get tv out to the s-video? If I get a VCR with an s-video output will the tv go through it or is the s-video output on the vcr only for when a tape is played? Or will using an s-video for tv capture not help the quality for tv capture.
    Thanks

When a VCR has a S-Video output, then you can do this you wish.

A regular sVideo cable will not interface with the sVideo in on a Ti4200 card. I have to use the breakout box to get to the card.

TV > sVideo cable to Breakout box > Box connects to Ti4200

Your Converter should have analog (RCA) in jacks also. If your converter accepts a regular sVideo cable, you should be able to view the TV through the VCR sVideo output.

Thanks for the answers. My converter does have both RCA and s-video inputs. If I am capturing from cable tv (analog cable, can't afford digital) will I have better quality using an s-video port over the RCA video port? Or since tv is my source will it not make a difference? I just want to make sure it will be worth it before I buy a VCR.

Recording via S-Video will be better for cable TV. Recording from VHS video tapes may not make much difference -- excpet that a VCR with S-Video outputs may have other high end features to improve the picture.

I ve tried to capture using Scart from VCR output and S-Video to capture card input, but no signal. RCA is ok though. Why is this happening? Is S-Video input only for S-VHS maby and not for simple VHS?

    Thanks

  8. No you should be able to output anything via the s-video output socket -- whether a VHS or S-VHS recording or a 'live' TV broadcast from the VCR's tuner.

The scart socket can also carry s-video in and out on most S-VHS VCRs and many TVs. There may be a switch on the VCR to change from composite input/output (composite is the signal that is also carried by the RCA phono type input) and s-video.

  10. From what I've read there are two types of scart/s-video converters. One for converting scart to s-video, one for converting s-video to scart. That is, the converters are directional. Make sure you have the right type.

Assuming you do have the right type, maybe there's a firmware switch on your VCR. Look through the setup menus for a composite/s-video setting.
