Once upon a time on my old PC I was able to encode directly from VOB files without any need to convert with DVD2AVI first. In fact the only reason I'd use DVD2AVI was if I needed an audio track other than the primary one. But now with TMPGEnc on my new PC I'm not able to import the VOB file directly into the program. So I did some testing...
I have all the same codecs on my new machine as I did my old one. The only difference is that the old machine came with PowerDVD and the new one has WinDVD. This is where the problem is somehow. I looked at the VFAPI settings on TMPGEnc on my old PC and it said there was a Cyberlink MPEG-2 decoder built into the program. My new PC does not have this VFAPI plug-in on TMPGEnc and I'm assuming that's the problem.
So do I need to get the retail version of PowerDVD (since the version on my old PC is from an image file instead of an installer) or is there another plug-in I can get that will do the same thing?

Newer versions od TMPEG require PowerDVD to be installed in order to open mpeg2/vob files. Not sure if Vfapi is required but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have it installed. It's available on this website.
