Well i just installed a cendyne 105 dvd-rw drive into the second port of my computer(I have an HP Pavilion 760n). I installed it with complete instructions and i believe i installed it well. There is just one point i am not to sure of, it says that there is a jumper that needs to be in master /slave/cable select positions, i have it in the slave jumper, but i noticed that the dvd-rom drive i replaced it with had a jumper in the cable select position, should i also place the jumper in the cable select posiotion?
The problem is that now my computer completely freezes(this has never happened to my comp ever before in it's almost 2 year lifespan!!). How it freezes is, when the drive is operating-reading or writing with the dvd-rw drive- the comp monitor shut's itself off and the computer has the busy light on the computer itself and for the cd-rw drive(the master jumper setting) thus making the keyboard and mouse useless(because the monitor is off and can't be turned back on) plus i try to turn the power off manually by holding the power on button the the computer itself but even that button doesn't function correctly, so the only way to shut off the computer is to shut it off from the main power switch(basically unplugging the whole computer).
Now for the difference i did to my comp was that i installed 3 different software utilities also. They are Nero Express, Nero Vision express, and Sonic My DVD, also Nero Media Player.
So what shall i do from this point, I am running windows XP Home edition. Should I system restore to a point from when i know the computer hasn't crashed? Or place the jumper to the cable select position?
I am new at installing hardware and followed every step with the manuals, so if some words i am saying are incorrect, well im a noob at it!!!

I can run the computer smoothly untill i try and virus scan, or i try to read/write a cd on the dvd-rw drive!!!
What would be the best way to get rid of my problem?? Should i do a system restore?? Should i set the dvd-rw drive jumper to cable select? Because the dvd-rom before the dvd-rw jumper was set to cable select.
Should i download a different virus scanner? Because this comp freeze up is becoming a bother!!!!!
ANY HELP APPRECIATED!!! -
Ok question is- What is the difference between these three jumpers?
Master-jumper
Slave-Jumper
Cable Select-Jumper(or it's callded something else!) -
ok i think i have solved the problem.
The original setting for the cd-rw drive was set to cable select jumper, and the dvd-rom drive was set on cable select also, so i went ahead and placed both jumpers on cable select. But i have had an incident when using both drives to read cd's to the hard drive images, the comp would run realllllllllllll sllllllllllllooooooooowwwwwww. Now what can that problem be?
Ok rundown:
Both Drives Reading to HD-I now Recieve The Freeze!!!
One Drive Read/Write-Everything runs smoothly
Both Drives Writing-Everything Runs Smoothly -
That's normal.. If you wanna get better results, don't install both CD-DVD devices on the same IDE PORT
-
Hi,
I wouldn't put a burner on an IDE channel set as slave - i would change the jumper on the back of the drive to master for the burner and slave for your cd-rom/dvd-rom drive.
That's normal.. If you wanna get better results, don't install both CD-DVD devices on the same IDE PORT

Ok, Im a noob at this, but i seen a few ide connectors free, i have a floppy, cd-rw drive, and a dvd-rw drive. Should i mix and match the ides so that i get the cd-rw set to master ide, and dvd-rw set to master ide. So maybe take off the floppy and use that ide cable and set the dvdr-rw on master and the floppy to slave, or cd-rw master and floppy slave. I dunno i need this run down, I have an extra ide cable that came with the dvd-rw but i don't know where i would find if i had an extra ide port to place it on?
Does it really matter if you would have cd-rw master and then have floppy as slave on one cable, then dvd-rw set to master. I am still having this problem of the comp freezing. So my next step is to try and mix and match so i can get both drives set to master-would it affect anything else? -

Secondary master - your CD-RW
secondary slave - your dvd-rom -
I would advise FIREWIRE addin card or USB 2.0 for
EXPANSION outta the box if you can
THEN YOU ACCESS THE DRIVE just as fast as IDE without the attendant IDE BUS MASTERING problems
or go SCSI if you can afford it!
but ADD-IN IDE is risky(data corruption on HDDS possible) and an unnecessary complcation to my way of thinking.
The only drag I find is I can't acess my firwire drives in DOS so I've gotta keep one or more optical drives in the tower itself
This is only good until SERIAL ATA gets warmed up then ask us again :) -
ok now i have 1 ide cable only connected to my cd-rw drive, then i have my hdd and dvd-rw drive connected to the same ide cable. I have the hdd jumper as master, dvd-rw jumper on cable select, and cd-rw set to cable select jumper also. I am still having the freeze problem!!! This is getting very annoying!!!!!
As for the controller card, how much do those run for, and would i be able to install it hassle free(like the dvd-rw suposed to be-ez to install).
Should i just take it to a computer place and see what i can have done? I would like to learn how to do these problem fixes hands on, because it's a good learning experiance that i enjoy(and hopefully cheaper too!!!) -
Ok here we go again-----I now have placed the dvd-rw drive on the top expansion bay connected to one single ide cable, and set jumper to master, now i have the other ide cable connected to hdd-set to master- and also connected to my cd-rw drive in lower expansion bay-jumper set to slave.
Now from my experiance, when i write cd-r's using both drives at the same time, i get a slowdown on the buffer, but theres the buffer-underun that comes to play to solve this problem. When i read using both drives at the same time i get major slow down still, but i didn't get a freeze(well i didn't give the comp a chance to because during the slow down when reading using clone cd i quit one of the drives reading process).
I will keep my problem updated, Now i just hope i won't get that horrible freeze!!!! -
The freeze still came even though i set everything right as stated above.
So for now, i will only have my dvd-rw connected and not have any other drive connected untill i see a solution to my problem!!!
Thanks for the help soo far!!! -
To help you more , we'd need to know what kind of MOBO you have what kind of chipset is in it?
If you have a VIA chipset.. FREEZES are possible and likely if you haven't loaded the HYPERION 4-in -one driver
If you have an Intel Chipset that is newer than your OS
(that is - a p4 with anything less than WINXP) then you need drivers from the intel chipset for IDE bus mastering from INTEL or the Intel App Accelerator
If you have a CYRIX or C3 chip , get rid of it and repost :) -
well, i don't know what type of mother board i have, but i am running an intel pentium 4 processor that's 1.8ghz, 512mb ram, 120 gig hd, and it's a hp pavilion 760n, and i'm running Windows XP home edition. If there is a way to check what mobo i have then tell me please!! As of right now i have just the dvd-rw(cendyne 105) connected to the comp only, i don't have any other cd-rom drives connected, and as of right now, im not getting the freeze, but i really want to connect my cd burner also!!!
-
Just because you have a P4 doesn't mean the companion chipset is not made by VIA TECHNOLOGIES
Download SI SOFT SANDRA and run it.
The page called SYSTEM will tell you which motherboard and chipset you own
if you have intel companion chips:
You can install the following and it should help you
Intel Application Accelerator
If you have Via: go get the 4 in one driver..
Then try the CD burner again..
If no go...you can always buy a pricey external box (USB 1.1 you can burn up to 4x) or get a 2.0 PCI USB 2 card and burn at 48X ..
Firewire is even better but costs a little more -
Also..please get SP-1 for WIN XP home Edition
Its free....:-) -

Ok heres what i get with soft sandra, from this point what shall i do next?
I am going to install the application accelorator, after installed should i re-check and connect both the dvd-rw drive and the cd-rw drive? Make it on the same ide cable? Or make it where hdd is master, cd-rw slave on same ide then dvd-rw master on one ide cable!!
I really appreciate your help!!!!!!!!

Brookdale Chipset!
Very Good for Video work indeed..
I think If you install Service Pack 1 and the Intel Application Accelerator...you'll not have FREEZES this time..
.
I don't think it matters If the DC/DVD devices are slaves or masters, but put them opposite each other (one on one IDE port one on the other but doesn't mater which is m or s)
ps Sondra tells all, huh---nice video card -
By the way I see you already have firewire, so if it doesn't work this time..Use a firewire box and put the burner outside the tower.
My burner works great in Firewire box and I can connct it instantly to any system..Plus when you use one firwire port, they give you another..you don't need hubs and repeaters! -
ok, if i installed windows service pack, and install the application accelerator, then everything should be fine? Do i need to do anything with the accelerator like select something to accelerate?
-
I could be wrong here.. but I think it just gives you IRQ wait states that are reduced in time because the OS really understands the Intel Chipset
and knows when to wait and when to pass along IRQ's or INTERRUPT REQUESTS from devices connected to the MOTHERBOARD's IDE PORTS..No tweak necessary -
INTEL APPLICATION ACCELERATOR
Just opened the app myself..No tweaks visible, but LIKE SANDRA, it gives alot of info..just when you think there's a page with tweaks.....
this funny page: SCREENSHOT BELOW
-
Ok, i have my app accelerator oppened, and it seems i have a different version than you do? Anyways, i dont get that screen for optimization! But when i looked through the help index i found that i can do tweaks, so what i did was set the transfer mode limit-it was originally set to no limit, so i set the cd-rw to UDMA-2, and the dvd-rw originally set to no limit is now on UDMA-2 also.
Before i did these teaks, after i installed the accelerator i tried once again to read from both the drives, and it worked for the frst time, the only bad side is that anytime i read/burn my read buffer is low, and that before any installs my read buffer was always at least 98%. The other bad side is that the comp still freezes not when reading or writing cd-r's using both drives at the same time, but when i try to scan my computer for viruses using mcafee virus scan online, when i scan the whole computer i still recieved the freeze!!!!
Any sudgestions on the UDMA-2 transfer mode limit?
Maybe set my cd-rw drive lower than udma-2(i dont know what im talking about or what exactly these settings do, im just firguring that these are some special transfer rates from slowest to highest which is UDMA-2/5
All the transfer modes are:
PIO-0
PIO-2
PIO-3
PIO-4
DMA-MW-1
DMA-MW-2
UDMA-0
UDMA-1
UDMA-2 -
Now I'm at a loss as to what to advise..Anyone else still here?
Or should we continue with E_MAILS, Ballin? :-)
al I can add
UDMA-2 = ultra ata 133
UDMA 1=ultra ATA 100
UDMA-0=ultra ATA 33
I read somewhere (DUNNO the TRUTH) that all CD-ROM dvd ROM device have to be ATA 33 to work -
i have to say that i am very frustrated, here i thought all this help would get me to the point of fixxing the problem!!! This shouldn't be a problem at all!!!!! Here i have a perfectly good computer to place a dvd burner and a cd burner or any other cd-rom/dvd-rom dive. But no i have to use only 1 dvd burner or 1 cd-r burner and 1 dvd-rom. I would think any decent comp would be able to run 2 drives at once? So what's the deal with my 1.8ghz, 120gb hd, 512 mb ram comp?
As of right now i set just the dvd-rw drive active.
When i had both the cd-rw and dvd-rw drive at use then the comp would freeze at any given random time, weather i am surfing the internet, or scanning my computer for viruses(when scaning my comp for viruses i alwas get this annoying freeze up!!!).
So now what's sudgested? Should i take the comp to a repair place to have them install a controller port to use my dvd-rw on one ide, and my cd-rw on another ide, then my hd on the master ide?
I have firewire, so how much would one of those external boxes run???
Should i notify cendyne about my problem, like tech support? I am really getting desperate and aggrevated!!
Last thing i would like to say, I appreciate all the help especially from dcsos you helped the most, thanks for looking out!!!! -
I have firewire, so how much would one of those external boxes run?
I've seen ones as cheap as $65
http://avlogic.com/product.cgi?code=11933008
for 5.25 DEVICE you need this as lots of them boxes are for 3.5" only
I ordered one of these from them and I'm happy with it...very compact -
hey dcsos, i am now positive that the problem i am having-really severe freeze up of my computer no longer has to do with the cd-rw/dvd-rw drives installed!!! This really bad freeze lockup occurs anytime it feels like!!!!!! This freeze up especially happens when my hd is accesed for a long period of time!!!! I say this because i ran mcafee virus scanner to scan my whole hd and everytime without fail, i get the freeze at any given time when scaning my hd for viruses!!!!! I even ran virus scanner without any drives connected!!!! Also i noticed that my ide cable to my hd was all messedup, it was bent and folded, so i used the ide cable that came with the dvd-rw drive and replaced it, and i noticed a severe change, i was able to access my hd way faster!!!! Would anyone know where i should post my comp freeze up!!! Maybe a tech support? Should i email intel? microsoft? Hewlet Packerd? Or should i take it to a local computer repair or something!!!
