  1. I am from India and got this ADS Instant VideoCD USB converter a couple of weeks back. I installed the software and the USB drivers for the hardware without any problem. It took me not more than an hour to get it working. The capture too is good using Ulead VIdeoStudio 6.0 SE Basic. The only problem that I am facing about is 'frame dropping'. This makes the captured palyback run a bit faster. In India we have the PAL format (25 fr). The Hi8 Camcorder that I have has a PAL60 output to which when switched would give colour capture. I believe PAL60 would be nothing but an enveloped NTSC format. I am a newbie in this area but am trying to get the framing to set right so as to avoid frame dropping. Hope it works.

I had asked this question to a member - 'mategal' after refering to his Guide on conversion posted on this site. But he too is stumped on this one. If somebody knows how to go about the conversion i.e PAL60 to PAL, they are welcome to comment. Thanks in advance for giving it a thought.

PAL60 is NTSC with the same color carrier frequency as PAL.
So PAL60 is neither NTSC nor PAL, but acceptable to most PAL TV sets and normally nothing else. You need a format converter or a tweaked video a/d converter to record from a PAL60 device.
But where did you buy this camera?I got a PAL Sony DCR, which can playback NTSC tapes (as NTSC) or PAL (as PAL).
Never heard about a PAL60 DCR (maybe it's old and sort of NTSC on PAL playback provided)!?

Unless it is USB2 that's where your dropped frame problem is.
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

    640 x 480 @ 15-20 fps
    VCD MPEG-1 352 x 288 @30 fps (PAL)
    VCD MPEG 1 352 x 240 NTSC
    Connection to PC: USB 1.0

These are the specs. They do a mpeg-1 conversion before they send the video to the USB 1.0 port. The VCD bitrate is low enough for the USB 1.0.

  6. Thanks everybody.....

Sorry folks... was not on the Net for quite some time hence could not check on the replys.

Gees - I use USB 1.0 'coz the ADS USB drivers are such.

Dragonsf - I have a Proscan PRO898 Hi8 that was bought from Circuit City way back in late 1998. I have searched a lot for a good conversion software and hardware... I also checked if there were some Firewire stuff available to directly connect the camcorder. Finally I decided on the ADS Instant VideoCD USB converter as it would be easy for installation. PRO898 provides a PAL60/NTSC RCA/S-Video output through a custom interface/presentation on the camcorder end.

The output when switched on the camcorder to NTSC, plays a B/W movie on the TV with no sound. While if it switched to the PAL60 mode, it plays full colour non-distorted and crytal clear movie with sound.

SatStorm - I checked the link that you recomended and read through that post. It pretty much addresses the same issue. I also think that I should be using DScaler to convert PAL60 to PAL50.

Great help all of you... Shall try out the same and revert. Till then if you folks have any more suggestions or more queries on the equipment that i have, do not hesitate.

    thanks again.
    Abhi...
