  1. I will soon be purchasing my first DVD burner (internal).
As my pc already has an existing DVD player drive and a CD burner,
I was wondering whether I should replace the existing CD burner with the new DVD burner?
I believe te new DVD burner will also be capable of burning CD's and playing DVD's.
Do most people replace an existing DVD player on their PC's or would it be advantageous to replace the PC's CD burner??
Any advice on this would be appreciated!

The DVD burners have CD burning capabilities so you might not even need your CD burner. If it was me.........I would replace my CD burner for the new DVD burner for 2 reasons.

    1. The new DVD burner will burn CDs at either 16X or 24X (depending on which burner you get)

    2. "Most" DVD roms will rip your DVDs much faster than using your DVD burner to rip them.

Now of course all of these factors depend on what type of DVD-rom you have and what type/speed your CD burner is right now also. If you have a 12X or 16X DVD-rom..........keep it. My Pioneer 105 DVD burner will rip DVDs at 2.2X at the FASTEST i've ever seen, my TDK 440n DVD burner will rip at 4X-6X at the FASTEST, but my 16X DVD-rom will rip DVDs at an average of 7X-8X but sometimes go as high as 15.5X

I'd say the majority of DVD burners are about 2X though (Sony does for sure). As for CD writing..........16X is fast enough for me to burn CDs (about 3-5 minutes)

  3. Sorry if the question sounds stupid but what is meant.
by DVD Rom ripping, I thought burning and ripping were the same
Isn't a DVD Rom the DVD player drive?
    Thanks for your help!

  4. "Ripping" refers to the copying of data from the dvd or cd to the hard drive. "Burning" refers to the writing of data onto a dvd or cd. They are basically opposites.

    Idreos,
    Boy, what a stupid question.
    Kidding.
If you have a DVD Rom drive ( a DVD player ), keep it. I would sooner wear out a 39 buck DVD-ROM ripping DVDs than a 300 buck DVD burner.
If you have a fairly fast CD burner, keep it. I would sooner wear out a 50 buck CD burner than a 300 buck DVD/CD burner.
If you have a bay to fit a third drive into, 3 knockout panels on the front of your machine, install the burner as a third optical drive.
If you have 2 HDDs already, you are going to have to get an ATA expansion card to allow you to install a 5th and maybe a 6th EIDE device. If you are paying 300 or so for a DVD burner, it is not unreasonable to expect you to go the extra 35 to 50 for an ATA card. It will also allow you to split these drives up so that you don't have clashes with use of a drive on the same channel as another drive. If you have only 1 HDD, an ATA card will allow you to have 4 Masters, all devices on separate channels, zipping data to and from, without waiting for another device to quit the channel.
Someone is sure to tell you that you have an inadequate power supply for this setup, without even asking what your power supply is. You are not going to be using all these devices at the same time, and I'm sure your standby power needs are probably within your PS output range.
Oh, yes. Please go to a less "hurts the eyes" font.

Look at it as a copy and paste.

"Ripping" is like coping the cd/dvd to your harddrive.
"Burning" is like pastting it to a cd/dvd.

A DVD-Rom can Copy a DVD, but not paste to a DVD.
A DVD-Rom can Rip a DVD, but not Burn to a DVD.

A DVD-Burner can Copy a DVD and Paste to a dvd.
A DVD-Burner can Rip a DVD and Burn to a dvd.

    A DVD-Rom can Rip(copy) from a DVD at a faster Rate(8x-16x)
    then a DVD-Burner (2x-4x) can.

    But then again a DVD-Rom can't burn(paste) to a DVD.

Now, if that makes your head spin. What kind of media does it accpet.
    DVD-R
    DVD-RW
    DVD+R
    DVD+RW
or all. (which would make it a combo drive).

There is a differance in each media=(DVD Disk Type).

    Idreos,
Not only is Junkee right, but it sounds as if you are in for a big surprise when you find that you also have to do some finagling with the files you "ripped" before you can even consider "burning".
There is a "learning curve" associated with this stuff.
    Welcome to the club.
Check the stuff to the left on the home page. Lots and lots of stuff to learn.
Don't worry, in a month, you'll feel you know enough to give help on the stuff you've learned. And, you know what? You really will! That's what's so great about this site. You learn, pal.
    Good Luck.

    decrepid,
That was a gag ?. My lame name was the one I chose 10 years ago as an address, all I use, not a made up per site. I asked a ?, I wasn't criticizing.
And, you just "might" have noticed the smiley after my remark to Idreos.
Decrepit is correctly spelled with a "t", which is why I asked, sounded out or not.
