  1. i have just started using the new mp3 format ( mp3 pro)
sound quality is excellent, file size is half the size...so you get double mp s on a disk.
so i a wondering...no one else seems to use it...why???
    have i missed something??

  2. Isn't that just a VBR form of MP3? I think it's been around awhile already.

  3. Nevermind. Apparently it's not backward compatible, however it works.

You can listen mp3pro with mp3 classic players, but the sound is crap.
I will use mp3 pro, when players like sonique and aplications like atomixmp3 start supporting it!

    The future is definately mp3pro...

Is there any standalone players supporting mp3 pro? At least I will stick with the original MP3 for widest standalone compatibility. And I already have 500+ albums on mp3 discs.

Can I come over to your place with a spindle of CD's please??? Sheesh, I thought I was going OK with 11 * 700MB CD's filled - a little over 2000 songs all up!

  7. He probably means that he has downloaded a mp3 album off the internet. This means that they only have about 20 songs per cd

Hey! In 3 years, there gonna be standalones for mp3pro, etc...
Nothing come with the hardware and software support at the same time!
Also, you can always re-encode your mp3 collection
(I have a huge one too...)

In 2-3 years, when dvd+r (or whatever) come out really cheap, I imagine myself with 2-3 disks, full of mp3pro, with all my collection..
And I was a pro DJ for about 8 years.....

The reason I have not used mp3 pro is because I simply hadn't heard of it until right now when I read this thread... now that I know it exists, I am in no rush to go and start re-encoding all my stuff to that new format. However, I wouldn't mind trying it out, cause I always like testing stuff out and using the latest and the greatest... so, one question: Does Winamp play these? Winamp is the one and only mp3 player I will ever use, so if it doesn't play mp3 pro, then I won't ever hear an mp3 pro file until Winamp supports them.

  11. YES M8 , I HAVE A LITTLE PLUG IN FOR WINAMP THAT ALLOWS YOU TO PLAY THEM, THEY WILL STILL PLAY WITHOUT THE PLUG IN, BUT SOUND CRAP, I CERTAINLY WOULD NT START RE ENCODING MY OLD STUFF, BUT IT S GOOD FOR ALL THE NEW STUFF

Yes, cool. After reading this thread, I immediately made my way to the google site and searched, found the site of the company that made it. I read it all. Sounds like a great technology.

Apparently you encode your music at half or anything lower bitrate, and there is another stream in the file called the SBR stream which emulates the high frequencies of the full bandwidth of the sound wave... So basically at 64kbps, your mp3pro sounds like it is 128Kbps... Not bad. If you don't use the Winamp plugin they have at the site, you will be listening to the 64kbps stream only, so it won't sound better, but worse. If you want to keep winamp and start using mp3pro, they have the plugin there at the site. I haven't gotten it yet since I haven't downloaded any mp3pro files yet. Someone care to point me out a place that has mp3pro files, or maybe BIGTHREE2001 can send me something?

Whoa. So wait... it even enhances normal mp3s?? Or no?
Anyway, yeah, sounds way better than 64kbps. I downloaded NElly - Ride Wit Me and Purple Pills by D-12. Life House's Hanging By a Moment, too. Sounds pretty damn good for 64kbps, that's all I can say!

Count me in as an official supporter of this new format. Since I barely download mp3s, and encode them myself, I will still not use it often, though, but yeah, once encoders use it, I won't fight it.

Cool. I'll think about it, but right now I use CDex to extract from CD and encode to mp3 files all in one click... the program I use also uses plugins, so maybe they will make a mp3pro plugin for it soon. If they do, I will still use VBR with 192 average bitrate, except that now the files should sound like they are ~384kbps!

  17. I just bought the MP3 encoder from Nero. It's only $15 and works will Nero 5.5.4.0 or higher. This will encode to MP3 or MP3 Pro. There is also the option for CBR or VBR. It's extremely fast and the sound quality is very good. It can batch process all the songs in a music CD in less than 5 minutes. (This is also good for adding music to a VCD).

  20. Whatever happened to the mp4? Or is pro the same thing? When is mp3 gonna be for video?

  21. Nero is basically stealing from you if you pay for the MP3 enocoder. 15 bucks extra for something that should be included in the first place

  22. mp3pro sux. but guys who archive their files @ 128kbps won't hear the difference. try to encode some fatboyslim music and discover the baaaad quality of mp3pro.

i only archive @ vbr (192-320kbps), no lowpass-filtering. even then i sometimes hear artifacts.

    just my 0.02 EUR,

Yes, I am like Elchknie... I listen to a lot of electronic music like fatboy slim and Daft Punk or even The Prodigy. I encode all my stuff VBR with min 32kbps, average 192, and max 320kbps with an excellent freeware program called CDex. This is because I love high quality music and I have high quality speakers. However, I sometimes have to download songs if I don't want to buy the whole CD or just can't buy it yet, so then is when I would most likely use mp3pro... on downloaded mp3s.

Yes, That would be great. Also is there a free program for converting Wav files to Mp3 Pro?,
WinAmp proberbly does it but I hate the way it does convertions. Is there a codec I can use with Mp3 Workshop?

    Go to http://www.codingtechnologies.com/mp3PROzone/basics.htm
To read all about mp3pro. That is the official site of the people who released it, so if there is anything you want to know about this, go there. I think I remember seeing a link to their encoder and their player.
