I don't know what makes it happen but I bought 50 CompUSA brand 1x DVD-R for $1 each and they burn at 2x on my Sony DRU500A (firmware version 1.0f).

belo: depends on your burner, what brand is it? If its a Pioneer A05/105 or A04/104 then yes if the media quality is high enough to stand it. There is a firmware hack that allows you to burn at 2x on anything, but a lot of 1x media can't handle it anyway. There is also a hack to burn Ritek G03 disk at 2x and they seem to handle it fine. if you have another burner then likely no, I do not know of any other firmware hacks at this time.
Note before you go firmware hacking: it voids your warranty. -
