  1. As some of you may know from my previous posts, I have a V1 PS2 and a +R burner. Since I have a V1 I either needed to get a new PS2 or try to find a new laser. I chose to get a new laser. I found a place, http://www.vdo-specialties.com/ ,that guarenteed me 3 times that the new laser would read +R media. They sent it, and I installed it without a problem. Now, since it is un-modded for now, I could only test it with my +R movie backups (which later on i'm told isnt true). I have 3 movie backups that work perfectly in stand-alone DVD players, so I know the media is good. I tried all 3 in the PS2 with the new laser, and they didnt work. So, for the next few days I fought with www.vdo-specialties.com about them lieing to me and they completely denied ever gaurenteing it. Well, they finally agreed to send my money back as long as the laser still works. Well, in a last stupid e-mail, I told them what I assumed they knew all along. I said that my PS2 is currently un-modded and that cause of that I could only test +R movie backups. They sent me mail back saying "How could you have accused us of lieing when you dont even have it modded yet"? They also said "You have to mod it to play ANY backups, including movies"! So now, i'm saying to myself, "What the hell, there are tons of people on this forum that play movie backups without a mod". Now I look stupid to them for thinking what all you people are claiming. Is it only +R movie backups that require a mod? If anyone wants me to paste every mail me and www.vdo-specialties.com sent back to each other for more of a complete story tell me. For now here is the last thing they said to me-

YOU EVEN CANNOT PLAY MOVIE BACKUPS WITH OUT A MODIFIED PS2!!!!
NOW WE KNOW YOUR PROBLEM, AND I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU YELLED AT US FOR
    NOTHING!!!!

YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!

YOU THINK A MOVIE COPY IS GOING TO PLAY??? HA HA-HA!!!

IT DON'T UNLESS THERE STILL IS A MODCHIP IN THERE!!!!!

Some people have reported that TDK DVD-Rs work in unmodded V1 PS2s. I haven't been able to verify that yet but I'm going to try my Verbatim 2X discs and see if those work. I found that they do work in a friend's JVC standalone that wouldn't accept the Ritek G03s we put into it. Sorry I can't help with DVD+R...

I have a PS2 (don't know the version, but I got it 2 years ago) and it plays every one of my DVD-R movie backups. It does NOT play DVD+RW though...

    Good luck.

Just did a quick check on other posts and tried to play a Ritek G03 DVD-R and it will work under the following conditions:

    1) The memory card is pulled out of the PS2

    2) The burn was done using DVD Decrypter. I tried Instant Copy discs and they still don't play back. Haven't tried DVD2One or other programs yet.

    More tests ongoing...

If he replaced the laser he can only replace a version 1 with a version 1-3 laser and they dont work with + r's usually

In general but not necesarily always
    from my personal experience
Version 1-4 dont like dvd+r media but do like dvd-r
Version 5-8 Ususally will play either

If your ps2 doesnt like apple, verbatim, or ritek dvd-r then

the laser might need to be adjusted

So I think that he didint explain to you that a version 1 99% of the time will not read "+r" Bladestorm

I think the easiest solution since you have a "+ R burner" is

    1. Sell your ps2 and by a new model all new models will read "+ R"

2 Sell that burner and get a pioneer that does "- R" or the sony dru that does both "+ and -"

Also on a side not I have never had a bad experience with them but I only ordered parts twice.
I have never had them fix anything since I have my own ps2 repair/modding business

You are absolutely right no chip is needed at all unless you want to play divx movies you need a chip to use the divx boot disk but no dvd-rs ever need a chip to be played

vdo specialties is in the US I have heard that they take a long time to work on your ps2 is the largest complaint about them and they can be kinda rude sometimes I hear too but I didnt have any problems with them myself.

  10. VDO is being very un-cooperative. If it comes to it, can I count on some of you to back me up on this whole situation?

My friend had problems playing DVD-R media on his PS2 (version 1), bought the DVD kit which included a firmware upgrade, and all DVD-R media plays fine.

This is just second hand information from him. But I can vouch that DVD-R's do play on his version 1 PS2. The media used most often is Princo, and Ritek. Verbatium, Mitsui, and Maxell also work fine. His PS2 is unmodded.

Maybe worth a try for you. He paid ~$40 for the kit at a fleamarket. Came with a disc, and remote control.

You could contact Sony, and ask about a firmware upgrade.
