My buddy has an APEX AD-1100W.. Its about 4 months old. It played perfect up till about a week or two ago.. Now get this... It plays all the SVCD's I burn fine believe it or not. But now it will NOT play normal store bought DVD's? Whats up with that???
It will load a normal audio CD as well and play that. But when we try to load normal DVD's (UN BURNT ONES) it will NOT play them. The dvd's sit there and then state NO DISC? But I can place a NERO burnt SVCD in the player and it loads just fine and plays...
I tried TWO different DVD's and neither one would load?
Now I heard of dvd players not playing burnt media but none that will play the burnt and not the bought? Whats up with that??? This player seems to be a VCD and SVCD burners DREAM....
"Yeah my player can play all my back ups but not my bought ones..LOL"HE HE HE...
Anyone ever see this strange behavior before? If so could you help me help him out?
Thanks..
Spankey
I emailed APEX but can't wait to see what they have to say...I told him to get ready to chuck it. Seeing how he can buy another one with what shipping and thier labor will be..LOL...

Well if you put your UN BURNT blank dvds in it of course it won't play there's nothing on them
.
Sorry, you probably didn't think that was as funny as I did. Anyway, I have no idea as to why it won't play store bought dvds other than it is a faulty unit and you should get a new one either through apex or, if you still can, take it back to the store to save a little on shipping. -
I have a GE that's made by Apex and it did the same thing. I now just use it for my homemade vids. No big deal- I replaced it with a $50 Apex. DVD players are so cheap now they are disposable.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. -
My Apex 500ad, a few years old, won't play store bought DVDs anymore either. They do load, but only skip then lock up within a minute of playing. My Apex 5131 is starting to give problems on hollywood DVDs now too.
It plays DVD-R just fine
Playing burnt media may have adverse effects on the focus of the laser unit.
This happened to my Dreamcast too. It plays CD games fine, but won't load brand new store bought games at all. -
My Apex AD-703 stopped playing RW (DVD and CD) media after a few years, and started having real problems with pressed (store bought) CDs, yet it would play CDR without problems. Anyway, I opened it up and cleaned the lense, as well as oiled the rails (since I didn't have any lightweight grease, as you're supposed to use). It worked for a while and then regressed so I think it may have worked better if I had used grease.
I replaced it with a Pioneer with better video quality, so I can't really say what the final fix would be.
Just one more note - remember that different lasers are used for CD and DVD, so you can't really compare CD playing versus DVD playing. If you can get ahold of a DVDR to test it with then you may find more information. Or, you may give up and buy a new player -
Well guys after doing alot of research, I found a fix for this modlel and maybee others at that...
I will post the links below.... Hope they help.. The ribbon cable for the laser eye seems to get hung up inside the player and gives the NO DISC reading.. After doing this fix. It seemed to fix 95% of all players and it NEVER happened again..
Check it out..
