ok i followed the instructions to the guide "convert SVCD or MPEG2/MP2 files to VCD (or SVCD or DVD)" everything was fine except for the size of the movie. FOR some reason the size of the movie barely changed...its almost as if it was still in SVCD....anyways the dvd-video(authored on moviefactory) played fine on my APEX dvd player but it didnt play on my new Playstaion 2 or my new sony dvd player. Im guessing that the dvd-video that i created was not true dvd? Any help will be greatly apprecaited thnks

What resolution did you use and what bitrate? If you used a bitrate similar to 3000 or so, it will be the same size. If you have a resolution of 352x480 or 720x480, it should play fine on the PS2.

I have not read the guide you are reffering to, but if TMPEnc is involved, there is a chance for corruption of your moviefile, that's my experience.
Try to use another program to convert, and then before you burn check if your files are pure DVD files. If a program like Ulead Movie DVD Factory accept the files they should be pure. -
THanks for your reply...but isnt Tmpenc the best out there? Also when I open the file in moviefactory v2 it opens fine and I can burn the movie perfectly. Yeah the only thing is that its not compatible with my other dvd players and also the size isnt "dvd size mpeg" in other words I can fit two svcd(dvd-rip) movies on one dvd-r.

the file size depends on the bitrate, not the resolution. so if you keep it at or around 3000, 2 movies on one DVD-R sounds just about right.
it could be the media also and one other possiblity is the inclusion of a VIDEO_TS.VOB.
have you burnt over movies or such on the same media and have it work on your Sony and PS2? I take it you are using DVD Movie Factory, make sure it does not include a VIDEO_TS.VOB (Impression DVD Pro likes to do that). -
ok thanks guys for the reply's...after hours of trying three different authoring softwares and about four different dvd recording software I finally got it to work on all of my three dvd players including my PS2. I recorded my DVD's as DVD-ROM (UDF) 1.02 and it worked fine.

You might want to take a look at this:
http://www.garveycocker.com/SVCD2DVDMPG/
Should automate all the steps for you including header fake-out.
Really can't see any benefit to re-encoding and don't know why people do that when they convert to DVD. If you look at the math, upsizing and re-encoding will gain you NOTHING other than distortion. It does nothing other than attempt to create new data based on what is guessed to have been removed from the original. Why pad the video data with another 50% guesswork then re-encode at a larger bitrate? That's two muddification steps and the result is a much larger file...plus a whole lot of wasted time.
To illustrate, take a high-quality digital photo and crop a 720x480 section. Save it with a lossless format, BMP, PNG, something like that. Then resize it to 480x480 and save as JPEG. Then load that JPEG (to defeat "smart" photo editors...), resize it to 720x480 and save as JPEG again. Then compare the 2 JPEGs. The second one will be noisier. (Well, should be, this isn't a perfect illustration because MPEG data rate variances aren't really simulated this way but you should get the idea.)
Having said that, high-quality AUDIO upsampling is something you will probably want to do for compatability. Realize, however, going from 44 to 48 will also introduce error because there's no 1:1 correlation to the data sets.
That's really what happens, you're introducing two steps that attempt to force one data set into different parameters, once by adding 50% guesswork and another by re-sampling at different points from an extrapolated data set. -
Just got this email from the author:
Thanks for your interest.
I'm getting snowed under with requests so I will be releasing by the end if
the week. Just a final bit of testing to be done. Just keep looking at the
forums for news of the tool.
Thanks
