  1. This is the second time I've made this post and no one has replied to it, so PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME HERE.

If anyone knows how to fix this problem please help me as it is driving me mad trying to fix it. The file I have, when played on the computer, it has slight glitches, but will play on. However when I convert it to MPEG (because I can only play Standard Compliant VCD's on my DVD player), it gets to the glitchy part, and then freezes on that frame, yet the audio keeps going until the end of the file which the picture has frozen. When It is burned to VCD, it gets to the first bit that freezes (near the middle of the file) and then stops playing on my dvd player. So I need to find out how to make it so the file can be made so that it is Standard VCD Compliant, without using TMPEG Enc or a similar program, which seems to be fussy with files that are slightly glitchy in some places.

The file information that I can find is:
    Video Format: 4CC =mp43 Name: S-Mpeg 4 Version 3
    Audio Codec: MPEG Layer-3 Decoder
Stream Type and A/V Interleave: OpenDML AVI

That's all the information I can find on the file that may be of use to someone who knows what the hell there talking about (unlike me).

So if anyone can please help me with this issue it would be appreciated.

See guides on removing bad frames with VirtualDub. I don't think I ever have downloaded an AVI that was in perfect condition.

PS! Questions, whose answers are to be found in the guides at this site very often gets unanswered in the forum... DS

I'd say 80% of the AVI's I've downloaded off of peer-2-peer networks were corrupt. ESPECIALLY the ones that d/l the same file from multiple users in chunks (hint hint). Most can be fixed, but only some can be converted to another format and look okay.

Never assume that the quality is any good. A 1 CD DivX/XviD of a full movie is only so good( 90 minute movies are okay, but over 2 hours it really shows the low bitrate). 2 CD movies are generally very good, but again it depends on the settings used (5.1 sound can make a 2 CD movie have nearly the same bitrate as a 1 CD movie, so never assume). If your AVI's are in 2 parts and 400 MB or less, well, they are converted VCD's and don't hold your breath.

Read the guides on fixing AVI's in VDUB or get a copy of DivXfix. Realistically you are better off backing up your own movies.

  4. I've had the same problem several times and for me the best way is to download the DivX file again, but do not delete the first one yet.
Normally you will have to cut the file in 2 to fit on 2 vcd disks.
If the converted file freezes in the first half of the movie, try to do the same with the newly downloaded file. Try also the second part with this file. If this gives you problems, you can always try your originally downloaded file for the second part. This works for me most of the time
Personally I have bad experiences with so-called DivX fixing programs. At the end I always come out with a file that won't play at all.
