I can only get 80min. on 2 hour DVD-R, WHY?

I compile 3 stooges shorts to DVD and can only get 4 of them on one DVD.

My menu is very simple. A background and that's it. So 4 shorts are 20 minutes each.

I use Vdub-->.avi format
then TMPGenc-->.mpg2 format. I use VBR compile method. (my audio is .mpg layerII format).

That 20 minutes of film converts to a file between 950,000 to 1.1 GB.
My bitrate is 8.000.

Any pointers? I would like to get a little closer to the 120 minutes limit.

try lowering the bitrate from 8000 to something lower. Also, try lowering the audio. Instead of the DVd resolution, take a shot at the cvd res (352x480) with 48 mhz audio.

The bitrate for DVD can vary from 3 mb/sec to 9 mb/sec. To get 120 minutes on a 4.7 gig disk the bitrate has to be at about 5.1 mb/sec.

At 3 mb/sec, you can get about 4 hours of video on a DVD-/+R

I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference from 8000 to 6000. I can't tell the difference from 7000-4000 but thats just me. I wouldn't go lower than 4000 though.

Yes, but most people can't tell the difference.

I encode my mpg2 at high display size (something like 720x480, I'm not at my computer I do video on right now so I am guessing). Should it be a smaller display output?

720x480 is the required size for DVD-Video, so that is what you want.

Actually, 352x480 is also a valid DVD resolution, so you could encode at a lower bit rate by choosing this frame size instead. Personally, I've found that a lot of my stuff looks just fine at 352x480...

(Then again, it does depend on what you're encoding. A lot of the discs I've been making lately are archive copies of old off-the-air TV recordings from the 80's and early 90's, on VHS tape -- some of it recorded in 6-hour SLP mode, to boot. Thus, the image resolution isn't that great to start with...)

I have made dvd's with vbr 2000-8000kbs,and they seem to work perfectly.And i'm pretty sure ,that i can go even lower than 2000kbs.

4500 to 6000 PECK VBR
Audio set 48KHz at 224KB
