    Hi everyone !
It's my first post here ... (be indulgent about my lack of knowledge )

    I get an .avi
    I get its subtitles
I would like to put the avi with subtitle on one VCD (or SVCD)

I read more about this and I've got some problems.

    1st problem
When I open avi in VirtualDub, error message about "Improper audio ... VBR ... "
I read about that : save wav uncompress, and recompress with avi ...
 It seems ok but What do you think about this ?

    2nd problem
    Size/Weight of my avi.
 Do I have to resize my avi before the mpeg1 (or 2) recompression ??
The original size is : 576x320, 29.970 fps
 How can I proceed to burn my avi-"subtitled" on an only VCD ?
The original duration is 1h50min ...

    Last Questions :
 Should I use a very approved soft, Premiere, to do all of this operations ?
 May it permit to resize/recompress from original to vcd "white book request" ?

    Thanks for your help

  2. hi
1º should get some guides / read the forum
    (that´s what i do)
2º then put your problmes to the forum
there is a lot to explain
use VirtualDub_mp3freeze - because your avi file have mp3 audio
add subs in VDub no need to resize
    frame serve to TMPEGenc
can´t help more since your NTSC avi file, only use PAL or 23.976->pal
    try the guides
    sorry

Extract the audio with VirtualDub (Audio: Direct Stream Copy, File: save WAV)
Rename according to whatever codec was used for the audio in the AVI (mp3? ac3?) and convert to WAV with your most trusted ??? to wav converter, leaving you with the movie audio as a wav file.
Load the subtitler and resize filters in VirtualDub (in that order).
Load the subs with the subtitler filter (they might need converion to a type the filter can handle).
Resize to 352*288 (PAL) using lancos
Frame serve to TMPGEnc (video only).
Tell TMPGEnc to use ???.wav as audio source.

Don't use the wizard in TMPGEnc, as you can't fit 1.50 of movie on a CD as VCD - we have to do an XVCD.

    Click the settings button.
On the video tab, select MPEG-1 video. Make sure size is 352*288, Aspect ratio 1:1, frame rate as original AVI, Rate cotrol CBR, Bitrate 850 kbps (this is way too low, but if you want it all on one 80 min CD, that's the setting to use!) Motion search precision: High

On the audio tab, select mpeg 1 Audio layer 2, fq 44100, channel mode stereo, bitrate 128 (224 is standard, but the bits are better used for video!)

On the System tab, select MPEG-1 Video-CD (non standard).

Now everything is set up to produce a low bitrate XVCD, that will most likely both look and sound awful.

    Thanks a lot

I understand all the steps of these processes but it's a little bit difficult for me to summarize all ...

    I begin to understand ..

To summarize, my main problem -> put my 1h50min avi (subtitled) on an only one VCD (nevermind if I cannot reach a very high quality ... I know the constraint ... 750Mo = 1/13 * DVD capacity )

I am reading (again) all the tuto of this site ... great ... several dark terms becomes friendly

    Bye

  7. personally, i think the best way to put subtitles on an .avi is with VobSub, because its way faster than VirtualDub. you just need the .avi and the subtitle in .ssa format
then you convert to vcd with tmpgenc
the only problem is that VobSub doesn't work with some .avis, i guess it doesnt work with Xvid, i'm still looking for a solution...

    Ok for VobSub
    I'll try it!

My main problem, now, is the fitting of my movie on only ONE CD

I should compress a little more my movie (1h50min) to burn it on ONE CD ...
